Microsoft to build $500 million data center in Dublin, 11/06/07: Microsoft will invest more than $500 million in its first major European data center, designed to support applications delivered over the Internet, the company said Tuesday.

Data center staffing problems grow, 11/01/07: IT leaders continue to battle to find virtualization experts and other technical specialists to staff data centers, new research shows. A whopping 86% of data center managers say they struggle to find qualified applicants for data center jobs, according to Symantec's State of the Data Center Research report, released Oct. 31. Furthermore, 52% of respondents call their data center currently understaffed.

IBM launches server consolidation tool, 11/01/07: IBM has just launched an analysis tool that it reckoned would help businesses find under-utilized x86 servers that could profitably be consolidated.

IBM process turns waste silicon into cash, energy savings, 10/30/07: Big Blue is looking a little green around the chips. That’s because IBM announced a semiconductor wafer reclamation process that removes chip circuitry with an abrasive pad and water, saving money and leaving the silicon in better shape for reuse in solar panels or other duties. Enabling reuse is crucial because IBM estimates that approximately 3 million silicon wafers worldwide are scrapped each year.

Licensing change opens Apple Leopard Server to virtualization, 10/31/07: A change to the licensing agreement for Apple’s OS X Leopard Server will allow users to run virtual machines on Apple hardware for the first time, industry players say.
