COUNTDOWN TO '08 #5: FACEBOOK IS THE SOCIAL OPERATING SYSTEM

Pull on your hip waders; the flood of Facebook-centered predictions is about to begin. Every pundit will weigh in. Who's going to acquire Facebook? (Microsoft and/or Yahoo in a defensive move or some as-yet-to-be-named consumer goods and/or media company buying an instant market-leader position in the technology sector). Who will Facebook acquire? (We can think of only a few of companies it really needs to bring into its walls.) When will Facebook surpass [FILL IN YOUR FAVORITE TECH GIANT HERE] in market cap/employees/users? The Top X things that will be the downfall of Facebook. Will Mark Zuckerberg make the Forbes 500? You get the idea.

We're not going to speculate too much on any of those questions, but we will make this one prediction: Facebook becomes the Social Operating System of choice for millions of business and consumer users. Indeed, Facebook will be one of the rare social software systems where friends and family co-mingle with business colleagues - and no one freaks out because the other is there. Parents will get as much value from Facebook as their kids do. Big brands and businesses will leverage the platform just as much as local clubs, teams, and associations.

Hogwash.

True, the numbers do suggest more shipments (multimedia feature-rich phones are expected to exceed 300 million units in 2008, compared , but it's very apples-to-oranges when you consider several factors, including:

* TVs are much more expensive than multimedia handsets, and are designed to last much, much longer (my youngest TV is 6 years old, and I've purchased three mobile phones in that span).
