COUNTING DOWN TO '08: 8 TRENDS FOR NEXT YEAR

I just looked at the calendar. More frightening than the little goblins and bad Halloween decorations that blighted my neighborhood this week, I realized that we're down to the last 10 weeks of 2007. So, this week, it only seems right to talk about the precipitating causes that bring hype to a halt.

For much of the last 24 months, new consumer Web services have been offered to the market for free. Well, my friends, it's time we stripped the mask off of "free" to take a long look at what's really going on here.

EULOGY FOR THE PC

Ladies and gentlemen, I come before you today to mark the death of the PC.

The PC led a long and happy life, bringing joy to millions of people for many years. It started life in the simplest of ways, allowing people to type words faster, to draw lines and circles, and perform calculations faster than ever before. We loved our early PCs - and got misty-eyed like a parent looking at baby photos when we mentioned our "first one" (mine was a TRS-80 color computer).
