Storage in the EnterpriseNetwork World's Storage in the Enterprise Newsletter, 07/12/07Quantum expands SMB backup portfolioBy Deni ConnorQuantum expanded its portfolio of SMB backup products this week with a removable version of its Go-Vault Data Protection Solution. The company’s GoVault consists of two removable cartridges and a tabletop or server-embedded tape drive that lets SMBs backup their data, remove the cartridge and transport it offsite. Quantum says that SMBs without IT support will often leave backup tapes on the shelf in the office or not know how to handle tape-rotation. With the removable cartridge, an employee can take the cartridge home at night and swap in the new cartridge the next day.
The GoVault Data Protection Solution also includes backup software for Windows servers and features data de-duplication technology. It backs up only changes to files and operates at 26Mbytes/sec to 34Mbytes/sec. A Windows Explorer interface lets users retrieve files. Each cartridge can withstand a 3-feet drop onto hard surfaces. Further the GoVault is password-protected and data is encrypted. The GoVault competes with removable cartridge systems such as ProStor’s RDX, Seagate’s FreeAgent and Iomega’s REV drives. The GoVault starts at $400 for the internal server dock, two 40GB cartridges, Serial ATA II cabling and the GoVault Data Protection de-duplication software. Additional cartridges start at $100 and are available in 40GB, 80GB, 120GB and 160GB capacities.
