Under Orders to Become Web 2.0

I was an unwilling participant at a Corporate Marketing strategy meeting lately. It seems that everyone is bandying about the catch phrase of “Web 2.0” and Marketing wants our web presence to incorporate this.

Of course, no one has a real idea of what “this” is.

Ask each individual at the meeting exactly what Web 2.0 is, and you get many variations of answers. One answer was all wrapped around blogging and another said it was “Atlas”. Obviously he read an article about Microsoft’s Atlas and did not realize it is just their effort at AJAX.

But all heads swiveled to me when the VP said he thought it was a good idea that we move in that direction.

Oh, oh.

What am I supposed to do now? Successful websites are about content – not process. On top of that, Web 2.0 is about social interaction and mashups between websites. How do I tell them that Web 2.0 stuff is never going to get them more Sales? But nevertheless, I am now charged with putting Web 2.0 on our website.

Which lead me to an interesting discovery.

I am not about to start coding low-level stuff so our website can “do” Web 2.0. I want to buy, beg, borrow or …well… buy, beg or borrow some existing code that I can plop into website without a lot of work. But, there is very little in the way of Web 2.0-type Libraries or pre-written code for .NET coders like me.

I only found one website – aptly named, “Web2.0Tools.net” - that has some .NET Libraries for ATOM, RSS and OPML. Looks like a good start. It would allow me to very easily begin creating feeds for our Company news, product lines or other constantly-changing info.

Now, if I can only figure out a way to avoid those Marketing strategy meetings…
