Convergence & VoIPNetwork World's Convergence & VoIP Newsletter, 07/02/07A good VoIP watch and readBy Steve Taylor and Larry HettickToday, we’d like to recommend our readers check out some insights about VoIP shared by our friends and colleagues in the analyst community. John Dix, Network World editor-in-chief, and Brian Riggs, enterprise communications principal analyst at Current Analysis, recently sat down to discuss "VoIP Lessons Learned," and they have recorded their assessments in a Webcast. Brian, citing the oft-used cliché “VoIP is no longer a matter of if, but when” suggests that VoIP isn’t a magic wand that will solve all of an organization's communications challenges right out of the box. The 25 minute presentation covers: * How often enterprises need to upgrade their infrastructure before adding voice.
* Why adopters may not see expected productivity gains. * How VoIP fares for reliability. * Why VoIP systems may cost as much as the legacy system they replace, and much more. The second recommended insight is a paper written by Robin Gareiss, executive vice president and senior founding partner of Nemertes Research (and author of Network World’s Branch Office Best Practices newsletter), that explores the VoIP market in general and specifically focuses on the latest trends and practices for managed service providers and their customers. The paper titled “Third-Party VoIP Management on the Rise” discusses how VoIP has in many ways revolutionized the way people communicate. But with these advancements has come unprecedented network complexity and lack of internal expertise on how to implement, troubleshoot and optimize these networks. As such, a growing number of IT decision-makers are considering third parties, or Managed Service Providers (MSPs), to take over the monitoring and management of all or a portion of their converged networks — connecting a growing number of remote locations.
