As you may know, network routers are managed through a special administrative account. Router manufacturers set a default username and default password for this account at the factory, generally using the same settings for all of their equipment. To improve the security of your network, you should change the administrative password immediately after installing the unit. See below for an example of how it can be done, along with other tips and feature articles.

Trends in mobile messaging

Unified Communications

Network World's Unified Communications Newsletter, 07/31/07

Trends in mobile messaging

By Michael Osterman

We have just completed a major survey of mobile messaging in midsized and large organizations. Here’s some of what we found:

* 15% of the corporate workforce in midsized and large organizations in North America uses employer-supplied mobile devices. However, decision-makers anticipate that they’ll see in excess of 40% growth in the number of employees using these devices in 2008 and more than 30% growth in 2009.

* In terms of the devices supported by IT, BlackBerry devices clearly dominate, although Windows Mobile device support will be increasing over the next 12 months. Symbian support is also increasing, while Palm support will drop very slightly.

Network World Security Buyer's Guide

Find the right security products for your enterprise - fast. From anti-spam to wireless LAN security, our Buyer's Guides have detailed information on hundreds of products in more than 20 categories. With the side-by-side comparison tool you can evaluate product features to make the best decision for your enterprise.

Click here to go to the Security Buyer's Guide now.

* The integration of presence into mobile devices will increase significantly over the next 12 months: while only 19% of organizations today report that presence integration with mobile devices is a priority or very high priority today, that figure will more than double a year from now.

* What devices are users asking for? We asked messaging decision makers “On a scale of 1 to 5, how much demand is there among your mobile users for the following devices, where 1 is ‘no demand at all’ and 5 is ‘users are clamoring for this device’”? We found that BlackBerry devices are being sought significantly more than any other device, although significant proportions of users are also asking for Windows Mobile devices. Interestingly, of the four mobile devices we asked about (BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm Treo and Apple iPhone), the iPhone was last on the list.

Clearly, mobile messaging will have a major impact on corporate decision-making over the next 24 months, particularly in the context of archiving content, the security of the devices and the data they contain and the use of external services employed to manage mobile devices.

Cisco's road to software

Cisco's road to software

By Jeff Caruso

Have you heard? Cisco is becoming a software company. But not in the way it seemed last year.

That's right - networking's largest hardware company sees its future in software. My colleague Jim Duffy was at last week's Cisco Networkers conference in Anaheim, Calif., and reported on CEO John Chambers' assertion that "we have to become a software company."

We all knew that Cisco was headed in that direction, but I don't think we heard Cisco make this admission so boldly.

Get Up to Speed on the Latest in WLANs

Easily stay on top of the latest developments and issues in WLAN technology, standards, security, telephony, management and more with Network World's latest Executive Guide, "Keeping Up With the Wireless Whirlwind."

Last year the company was talking about how it was going to sell its router and switch operating system, IOS, differently. The idea was that the software would be more modular and more independent from the hardware it runs on.

Chambers scaled back that idea last week, according to Jim's article. He said the company is not breaking IOS into pieces - instead, Cisco is really just looking at having software sales less tightly coupled with hardware. Not exactly huge news.

Chambers focused more on the company's WebEx acquisition, the massive $3.2 billion maneuver that put Cisco at direct odds with the 800-pound gorilla in software, Microsoft. (On a related note, Cisco's marketing of WebEx has been getting on some customers' nerves, so maybe Cisco is trying a little too hard here.)

It was pretty self-evident at the time that buying WebEx meant a new direction for Cisco, and of course that's not the end, but rather just the beginning. This is the bigger story, and one that I'm not quite sure most people understand yet. Cisco can say it is becoming a software company all it wants, but what kind of software company will it be?

Editor's Note: Starting Aug. 14, this newsletter will be renamed "Network Architecture" to better reflect the focus of the newsletter. We thank you for reading Network World newsletters!

As he made his way toward Texas, Fire Controlman 2nd Class Petty Officer Russell Tavares posted photos online showing the welcome signs at several states' borders, as if to prove to his Internet friends that he meant business.
When he finally arrived, Tavares burned the guy's trailer down.

The appeal of managed WAN optimization services

By Ann Bednarz

Deciding whether to deploy and manage a new technology in-house using internal IT resources or go with an outsourcer is a common dilemma in the IT world, and the WAN optimization market is no exception.

As the WAN optimization market matures, more enterprises are opting to go with a managed service instead of running their own gear, according to Robert Whiteley, a senior analyst at Forrester Research who said he talks frequently with folks “struggling to get applications to deploy and perform well across a global footprint.”

Whiteley spoke about the future of managed WAN optimization services in a recent Webcast put on by Ipanema Technologies.

Manage Skyrocketing Storage

The data on your network is growing at a rapid pace that's only going to increase. Download Network World's latest Executive Guide and get the practical, real-world advice and insider information you need to best manage and meet your storage demands and industry regulations.

To set the stage, Whitely talked about how companies are taxing their WANs as they deploy more distributed applications, perform remote backup procedures, and pursue server and data-center consolidation efforts, for example. “What that means is that you’re asked to increase your application footprint while decreasing your infrastructure footprint, all while making it more secure and more able to recover from disasters,” Whiteley said. “It’s quite difficult and puts a big tax on the [WAN].”

It takes only a couple of demanding applications to create a fairly low-bandwidth or high latency network, and poorly performing applications can hinder employees’ ability to complete key business processes and effect customer care, Whiteley said.

When it comes to solving the problem of bottlenecks in the application environment, Whiteley said that a WAN optimization service can be more cost-effective than deploying in-house technology.

For one, a managed service eliminates a lot of upfront configuration pains. To get appropriate application visibility and control across a network takes a lot of setup work if you do it yourself, he said. In addition, a managed service lets a company quickly scale applications, decrease its network integration costs and mitigate ongoing costs associated with optimizing application delivery.

As the market for managed WAN optimization services gets off the ground, Whiteley expects they initially will be most appealing to small and midsize businesses, which in the past have been priced out of costly WAN optimization gear. As options mature, more large enterprises will consider the model, he said.

Meanwhile, options are increasing. AT&T launched a managed application acceleration service in early June, followed by network and security services provider Virtela Communications, which announced its own suite of managed services for improving application and protocol performance over the WAN about a month ago.

In the next newsletter I’ll share Whiteley’s recommendations for selecting the right provider.

How optimizing the business network could help you optimize your career

By Steve Taylor and Jim Metzler

As recently as a few years ago, it was difficult to find a network organization that was concerned with application delivery but now it is top of mind for the vast majority of businesses. Because of this, we’ve written extensively on the topic and have discussed application delivery from myriad perspectives, including trying to make sense of how the key vendors compare and sorting through the relevant issues on the minds of IT organizations.

One perspective we’ve not previously discussed is the impact of application delivery on our careers. We believe the impact is a classic good news/bad news situation. To put the good news into perspective, we believe that it is often difficult for the networking organization to be seen as providing direct business benefit. OK, there is no doubt that the company could not function without the WAN, but it also could not function without electricity. That does not mean that the company’s senior business managers believe that electricity provides direct business benefit. They know they need it and they just expect it to be there. In many cases, the same thing applies to the WAN. The difference being that many senior business managers would rather have a conversation about electricity than about MPLS or other WAN technologies.

So what’s the good news? The good news is that while senior business managers are not interested in WAN technologies, they are interested in the performance of the few key applications that they use to run their business. This presents the network organization with the opportunity to show business value, and potentially bolster our careers, by demonstrating how we ensure that the company’s key business applications exhibit acceptable performance.

Get Up to Speed on the Latest in WLANs

Easily stay on top of the latest developments and issues in WLAN technology, standards, security, telephony, management and more with Network World's latest Executive Guide, "Keeping Up With the Wireless Whirlwind."

As mentioned, there is also bad news, ensuring acceptable application performance is extremely difficult. One of the reasons is because ensuring acceptable application performance requires the tight integration of multiple tasks. As explained in our Performance Management Mandate report, some of the tasks that must be integrated include planning, optimization, management and control. We will come back to the topic of integrating these tasks in our next newsletter.

As we said, ensuring acceptable application performance is not easy but we believe the effort is worth it for a number of reasons. We’d have better careers if we are perceived as adding and managing the functionality required to ensure the performance of the applications that the company uses to run their business than if we are perceived as merely managing commodity-like WAN services.

We would like to hear from you on the topic of how application delivery is impacting your job. One thing that we are particularly curious about is whether you are spending less time on classic networking issues such as fault management and more on issues of application performance and security.

Biggest concern for businesses looking to deploy NAC

Biggest concern for businesses looking to deploy NAC

By Tim Greene

The biggest concern for businesses thinking about deploying NAC are the cost and complexity of the project, according to a survey by Current Analysis.

The worries about how complex the deployments are centered on whether the NAC gear would be compatible with other hardware and software already deployed and what it would take to remedy any problems, according to “The Current Analysis 2007 NAC Enterprise Demand Survey.”

Beyond these concerns, potential NAC users also worry in a general way that NAC gear isn’t fully baked yet. As a result, they may want to delay deployment until it matures, the survey concludes.

Network World Security Buyer's Guide

With the side-by-side comparison tool you can evaluate product features to make the best decision for your enterprise.

Despite these concerns, corporate investment in NAC is increasing and many seem on the verge of buying. Most respondents to the survey say they plan to have their NAC deployments completed within two years, with more midsized businesses indicating they will deploy within a year.

The large corporations say they expect NAC to be a continuing area of growth, not a one-time installation, the survey says.

Respondents to the survey were most aware of Cisco’s NAC than any other vendors'. “No vendor comes close to Cisco’s ability to garner market attention,” the survey says. Interestingly, though, start-ups that sell nothing but NAC gear generated the greatest loyalty among customers that have already deployed.

The other big vendor getting into NAC, Microsoft with its network access protection (NAP), is being hurt by its delays releasing the components necessary to deploy NAP. The percentage of respondents willing to wait for Microsoft to ship NAP has dropped since last year’s survey, and few respondents plan to deploy it when it is released later this year.

More information about the report written by Andrew Braunberg is available from Current Analysis.

Caringo updates content-addressable storage system

Network World's Storage in the Enterprise Newsletter, 07/31/07

Caringo updates content-addressable storage system

By Deni Connor

Start-up Caringo this week is enhancing its content-addressable storage system by adding local- and wide-area replication.

Caringo’s CAStor 2.0 software runs on commodity x86 servers that have a pair of Serial ATA drives in a cluster configuration. Each node in the cluster contains a USB memory key, which contains the CAStor software and enables the server to run as a content-addressable storage device. A CAStor cluster can consist of hundreds of nodes.

All files stored on a CAStor cluster are replicated to other nodes for disaster recovery. If a disk fails, the data can be reconstructed from the data replicated to other nodes.

The data on your network is growing at a rapid pace that's only going to increase. Download Network World's latest Executive Guide and get the practical, real-world advice and insider information you need to best manage and meet your storage demands and industry regulations.

The new version of CAStor adds asymmetric local- and wide-area replication to enhance the disaster recovery aspects of the cluster. Redundant data resides on separate sub-clusters within the same site or on a remote site.

Local-area replication lets an IT administrator create sub-clusters in CAStor and split the cluster based on location. Wide-area replication is used for disaster recovery and availability.

CAStor 2.0 also includes a new Web-based management console, from which IT administrators can monitor the health of the cluster and perform administrative tasks. It also supports booting of the servers from the network, centralized configuration files and performance enhancements.

This version of CAStor also introduces the concept of ‘anchor streams.’ An anchor stream is an updateable object with a unique identifier, where a user can store and update information such as database backups. Anchor Streams are useful for backups and system recovery. IT can create an anchor stream and write information to the unique identifier each time they back up CAStor. To recover information, the IT administrator simply accesses the unique identifier.

CAStor was created by Paul Carpentier, a former architect of FilePool, which EMC acquired and turned into Centera.

The product is available now.

IBM iSeries gets a Power6 boost

IBM iSeries gets a Power6 boost

By Jennifer Mears

Earlier this month, IBM announced an overhaul of its System i division that resulted in the blending of System i sales with System p sales in two distinct units: the Business Systems Unit, focused on small and midsize businesses, and the Power Systems Unit, focused on the enterprise.

By and large, the move was applauded by analysts who said the change in structure should help IBM better expand its customer base for the System i.

To that end, IBM last week provided a preview of the new operating system for the System i, saying that i5/OS Version 6 would be out in 2008. The new version will take advantage of advancements in the new Power6 chip by offering better security and virtualization capabilities, as well as broader support for Web services by including a Web application server built into the software. You can read about the Power6 chip and its features here.

IBM also announced a new Power6-based System i box – the System i 570 – which will have the new processor, but will run the current version of i5/OS until the new version of the OS ships. In the meantime, the current OS has been tweaked to support the MySQL open source database, IBM says. That means more open source applications will be supported on the System i hardware. The hardware itself is modular, consisting of up to four nodes with one to four processors each so that the i570 can be as large as a 16-way SMP box. IBM is offering a kind of pay-per-use pricing for the i570, as well. Get more specifics on the i570 here). The product should be available in September and priced starting at $165,000.

Science fiction author Roberto Bernocco wrote an entire novel is
his downtime using only his Nokia 6630 cell phone. In case you're
not familiar with that model, it does not have a QWERTY keyboard.
He used T9 to write the entire thing, which took him 17 weeks. It
was recently published.

Are The Carriers Killing Business Mobility?
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPq20EM
Welcome to Take 5, a regular feature on Over The Air where we sit
down with a wireless industry insider to talk shop about mobility
and business IT. This week's guest, Daniel Taylor, was the head
of the Mobile Enterprise Alliance. Unfortunately, the MEA has
decided to dissolve (more on that here) and Taylor is moving on
to a new role. Earlier this week I sat down with Taylor to
discuss the MEA's decision to close and how this move could
impact the future of business mobility.

http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPfT0Ej
InfoSpace made its Find It application available for the iPhone
today. Using a screen with iPhone-esque buttons in the browser,

http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPgt0EI
Welcome to Over The Air's first Friday case study. We'd like to
make case studies a regular part of the blog and we're kicking
things off with a look at how Mac-Gray's coin collectors used
standard field force gear to reduce expenses, reduce wear and
tear on its fleet and boost worker productivity.

http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPgu0EJ
Not only did revenue from smartphones leap 10% in the first
quarter of 2007 compared with the fourth quarter of 2006, sales
of Wi-Fi-enabled handsets are on track to top $145 billion in the
next three years. Is Wi-Fi the key to spurring smartphone adoption?

iPhone Problem No. 2: This Time The Hardware Went Kaput
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPgv0EK
It was just two days after last week's failed network
connectivity issues that the speaker on my iPhone died. How did
Apple respond?

Crackpot Analysts Way Off On iPhone Sales
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPq30EN
Now that real numbers are in, it's clear that estimates of the
number of iPhones sold in the first few days after the launch
were wildly inflated. So, it's worth asking, where did the crazy
off-the-mark numbers come from? It turns out that most of the
high-end analyst estimates were based on, well, analyst estimates.

Smartphone Plus Projector Equals Road Warrior Heaven
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPVV0EV
Imagine you're on the final legs of a never-ending road trip. You
arrive at the 100th client meeting that week to deliver the
PowerPoint you slaved over for weeks. Just as you set up, the
projector in the room goes dead. What do you do? Why not use the
projector on your smartphone?

Carriers At Risk Of Losing Enterprise Customers?
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPq40EO
Upstart Wi-Fi vendors could potentially pilfer certain enterprise
business segments from wireless network operators, according to a
new report from Analysys. Well, maybe.

Helio Launches Support For Exchange
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPq50EP

from Microsoft Exchange to its Ocean messaging device. The free
60-day beta trial is available immediately to Helio subscribers
and will run $9.99 per month for All-In members after the trial
expires. Is Helio trying to court the enterprise?

And The Mobile-Phone Leader Is ... Luxembourg?!
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPq60EQ
The OECD Communications Outlook 2007 is now out, and available
for reading online. It has a wealth of useful telecom statistics,
including the numbers of mobile-phone subscribers in the 30 OECD
countries. The country with the highest penetration rate is (drum
roll, please) Luxembourg, believe it or not, with 157.3 mobile
subscribers for every 100 people.

http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBBPt0Hi7YQ0G4U0FPBV0EB

of the so-called "fold" in a Web 2.0 world. Tarquini asks a

of those text messages were sent by teenagers, I contributed my
fair share. The 10 billion figure represents a 100% increase in
the amount of SMS traffic since September 2006. So, do you think
text messaging has finally caught on?

Tango boosts its enterprise fixed-mobile convergence gear with IMS

By Steve Taylor and Larry Hettick

Earlier this month, Tango Networks announced the addition of enhanced IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) functionality to its Abrazo product suite. The Abrazo system is an enterprise fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) solution designed for employees to share a single phone number for both their cellular phone and their office phone, along with providing the capability for the user to make and receive calls through the PBX from their cellular phones no matter where the employee is located. The handoff between phones is controlled by an Abrazo device that sits on the enterprise network so it isn’t dependent on a single wireless provider, although a carrier-scale device is also available for service providers who want to offer hosted FMC.

Abrazo enables features like four- or five-digit dialing from the mobile phone to another PBX extension, a single integrated voice mail box, user-defined call routing (similar to other IP telephony systems), and bilateral handoffs between the desktop phone and the cell phone. The system supports both GSM and 802.11 connectivity, and it has demonstrated interoperability with both TDM and IP-based PBX installations.

Tango also offers APIs so users can customize features to their specific business requirements. Recognizing that most enterprise users don’t have a dual mode (GSM/802.11) phone, Tango has designed the solution so employees can use their existing GSM mobile phone with features adapted to any limitations posed by the existing handset.

While the Abrazo solution is based on IMS, it is also compatible with existing carrier network architectures including IS41, WIN, GSM/MAP, and CAMEL protocols. Support for these legacy mobile operator protocols are important because even though mobile operators are moving toward a full IMS architecture, legacy call control protocols are still responsible for the lion’s share or network capability.

New models for mobile WANs?

Network World

Wireless in the Enterprise

Network World's Wireless in the Enterprise Newsletter, 07/30/07

New models for mobile WANs?

By Joanie Wexler

A truism often muttered by grizzled networking veterans is that the value of a network increases proportionately to the breadth of its reach.

This axiom has always represented a bit of a Catch-22, particularly in mobile WANs. If coverage represents the primary yardstick of a network’s value, why do multiple competitive mobile operators build islands of redundant networks in predominantly the same places?

The reason is that it’s the metro areas where the carrier money is to be made. And for the past 15 years, competition has been about basic connectivity and pricing plans.

Get Up to Speed on the Latest in WLANs

Easily stay on top of the latest developments and issues in WLAN technology, standards, security, telephony, management and more with Network World's latest Executive Guide, "Keeping Up With the Wireless Whirlwind."

However, Sprint Nextel has the opportunity to improve the situation. So do bidders in the upcoming 700MHz auctions. This new generation of networks could become standards-based, far-reaching mobile foundations that function as a service delivery platform, upon which innovators compete to deliver innovative application services.

For its part, Sprint has made important strides toward building a mobile WiMAX ecosystem. It recently announced plans to interconnect its mobile WiMAX infrastructure with Clearwire’s to collectively cover a U.S. population of about 300 million. The two companies have said that they will also work jointly on WiMAX-based application services.

Sprint has also partnered with Google to offer search, location services, social networking, e-mail, chat, and other application services on the WiMAX network. And the carrier has said it will provide access to anyone’s application services on its WiMAX network (unlike today’s closed cellular models).

These latest developments appear to be a strong step toward correcting what, IMHO, went wrong in the cellular industry in the mid-90s: using and developing two incompatible wireless protocols, splintering coverage and interoperability.

In what sounds like is shaping up to be an open-access model, Sprint and Clearwire will still have to work out how to control bandwidth for QoS. Perhaps they will leverage intelligent bandwidth management capabilities long used by enterprises. With deep packet inspection (DPI)-capable traffic shapers, operators can apportion capacity to specific applications and protocols on a per-subscriber basis so that users get what they pay for.

Now, DPI discussions teeter on the controversial topic of 'Net neutrality. Suffice to say that using network intelligence to enforce service-level agreements and efficiently manage capacity should be a no-brainer for any network operator. Misuse of DPI to unfairly control network use to benefit a few wealthy content providers is fodder for another discussion.

Managing IP video on the network

Networking Technology Update

Networking Technology Update, 07/30/07

Managing IP video on the network

By Bob Banerjee

The growing popularity of video surveillance is fueled by the shift to IP video systems that are less expensive than traditional analog systems and make it easier to add or relocate cameras and multicast video signals to multiple locations.

Network World VoIP and Convergence Buyer's Guide

Find the right products for your enterprise - fast. Our extensive database of detailed product information will quickly help you pinpoint the hardware or software you need to build out a converged voice and data network. Yet, every system is limited by two finite resources: network bandwidth and disk space.

A 100Mbps network connection can support nearly 85 cameras producing 10 15KB images per second (about 1Mbps each), but the network will be running at 100% utilization. Whether the IP video system is on the existing IT network or a parallel network, enterprises need to set a realistic bandwidth target and then determine how many cameras can be supported by their infrastructure.

To ensure efficient bandwidth usage, security integrators can help design fluid systems that adjust to accommodate traffic surges. For example, frame rates can be reduced temporarily while the sharpness of each image is maintained, or the same number of frames can be recorded at a lower resolution.

Video content analysis (VCA) embedded in an IP encoder — the device that translates analog camera signals into digital — also can reduce the amount of traffic sent across the network. With VCA at the edge, it is possible to only transmit video that generates an alarm due to a security concern — such as a person loitering, theft of an object or an object left behind in a scene. By selecting specific portions of video to forward, VCA diminishes the amount of bandwidth required for surveillance but enables all camera channels to be monitored effectively.

More on HP's big software strategy

More on HP's big software strategy

By Denise Dubie

You have to give it to HP: when company executives say they are "serious about software" they follow it up with billions of dollars in acquisitions. To be exact, the company has spent about $6.5 billion in "assembling and delivering capabilities" around its software business, according to Thomas Hogan, senior vice president of HP Software.

Last week HP shocked me out of my dog-days-of-summer-slow-news mood with its announced plans to buy data center automation vendor Opsware -- and for a very pretty price: $1.6 billion

Now, let me clarify: I was not shocked that companies were interested in acquiring Opsware. I had just written an entire package of stories about how automation was the next big thing on the management front and had talked to countless people about Opsware being a leader in the market. And BMC also announced it had acquired automation technology with its RealOps purchase.

New Executive Guide

Network World has recently published an executive guide entitled "Virtualization Meets Reality". Find out the 8 key challenges of virtualizing your data center.

Download it now!

I was surprised that HP, which less than a year ago completed its $4.5 billion acquisition of Mercury Interactive, was putting a lot more money down in another big software acquisition. But like I said, the technology is hot. And Opsware not only has server provisioning capabilities, but it also has network configuration technology, thanks to its acquisition of Rendition Networks. Opsware also acquired run-book automation start-up iConclude earlier this year, giving the vendor a triple play of automation capabilities.

Rumors had been flying around that VMware and others were looking to acquire Opsware, which may be why HP paid a high price for Opsware and its hot technology. Opsware reported more than $100 million in revenue for 2006, that means HP paid about 16 times the acquired company's worth. Industry watchers wonder how, after paying so much, HP will get its money back and start to make a lot of money in software.

"[The acquisition is an] excellent move for the future of HP Software in terms of technology. HP has spent $6 billion in two years to get a $2.2 billion software company," says Jean-Pierre Garbani, a research vice president at Forrester Research. "How they're going to get their money back is a big question, let alone how they're going to make money."

IEEE chooses two higher speeds for Ethernet

Network World

Optical Networking

Network World's Optical Networking Newsletter, 07/30/07

IEEE chooses two higher speeds for Ethernet

By Jeff Caruso

Should the next standard speed of Ethernet be 40Gbps or 100Gbps? Last week the IEEE's Higher Speed Study Group finally came up with an answer: both.

We saw last month how the group, which had seemed to settle on 100Gbps as the next speed for Ethernet, actually continued to be divided over whether the speed should be 40Gbps or 100Gbps. Last week's meeting was to be a crossroads; the group had to choose a path. It could split into two groups or it could just choose one speed or the other.

The group chose a third option. There will be a single task force working on both speeds, which is the first time such a thing has happened. The project will include the 40Gbps rate for server and storage applications and the 100Gbps rate for aggregation.

The Ethernet Alliance issued a statement laying out the rationale for the dual-speed objectives:

"The HSSG investigated the needs and requirements for the next speed of Ethernet technology. A key finding was a divergence in bandwidth demand between the networking and computing industries. It was discovered 100GbE would likely best meet the demands of the next generation Internet backbone and network aggregation points. In enterprise computing, 40GbE better matches the bandwidth demand driven by server technologies such as host bus interfaces, memory speeds, and multi-core processing."

The group proposed physical-layer interfaces that would allow distances of up to 100 meters for 40Gbps and up to 40 kilometers for 100Gbps.

However, by pursuing both standards in the same group, is the group biting off more than it can chew? This will be a grand experiment.

Game over for OpenDocument? - LinuxWorld, 07/23/07: Is it game over for OpenDocument? Probably. We've been expecting Massachusetts ITD to publicly revise its open formats mandate to include Office Open XML (OOXML) ever since Louis Gutierrez resigned as CIO in early October 2006. That was as clear a signal that ODF had failed in Massachusetts as needed by anyone in the know.

The only surprise is that it took new ITD CIO Bethann Pepoli so long to make the announcement that OOXML would be officially recognized as an "open" XML file format going forward. How she determined OOXML is open when the Microsoft Open Specification Promise allows no other developer to implement it is a mystery, but it seems a safe bet that the decision was based on political and practical considerations rather than sound legal advice about OOXML's qualification as an open standard.

User pressure leads SugarCRM to adopt GPLv3 - LinuxWorld, 07/25/07: SugarCRM is to adopt Version 3 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3) for the next release of its CRM software after coming under pressure from its user community to move away from its earlier Sugar Public License. Sugar Community Edition 5.0, the open source version of the SugarCRM software, due out in September, will be licensed under GPLv3, the vendor announced Wednesday. GPLv3 debuted at the end of June.
