Storage in the EnterpriseThis newsletter is sponsored by NetAppNetwork World's Storage in the Enterprise Newsletter, 10/18/07Vendors at Storage Networking World show off new waresBy Deni ConnorStorage Networking World in Dallas this week is the playground for a bunch of new storage gear and appliances from the likes of EMC, Hitachi, Copan Systems, IBRIX and Mellanox. These vendors are either introducing new storage platforms or in the case of Copan Systems unveiling new functionality. EMC is announcing a new version of its EMC Disk Library, a virtual tape library appliance that now supports 1TB disk drives, adds compression and features RAID 6 capabilities. RAID 6 gives the virtual tape library resiliency against multiple disk failures and requires fewer spare drives. The EMC Disk Library also now supports 1TB Serial ATA II drives. New software with the EMC Disk Library includes a virtual tape migration tool that makes it possible to move data for performance or load-balancing. The model DL4000 EMC Disk Library now supports hardware compression.
Copan Systems, a company which pioneered the concept of a Massive Array of Idle Disks (MAID), is adding data deduplication capability to its array to save space on data stored on disk. Called SIR-M, the deduplication allows one set of common objects to be stored. Copan is also introducing the R300, an array with up to 6PB of capacity in a single rack. IBRIX and InfinBand vendor Mellanox are unveiling a network-attached storage system for customers with data-intensive applications. The NAS system uses the InfiniBand interconnect and combines IBRIX’s Fusion file server gateway with Mellanox InfiniBand adapters. Hitachi is rolling out an entry-level module array for small and midsize businesses called the Modular Storage System. This array is intended for use by companies or individuals that have no storage experience. It integrates with Symantec’s Veritas Backup Exec and Microsoft Windows and starts at under $5,000. Xiotech, Dot Hill, iStor, Cleversafe, Fujitsu and FalconStor are also launching new storage hardware and software at Storage Networking World. More about them in the next storage newsletter.
