CHRIS SHIPLEY: DEMO IS ABOUT PRODUCT INNOVATION, NOT JUST START-UPS

We are deep into the screening process for DEMO 08, and from the looks of the messages in my inbox, so too are many companies that are - as they should be - carefully evaluating launch venues for their new products.

The DEMO Conference is not a small undertaking. The event provides a platform with a lasting, global reach for companies - young and mature - to announce products and services to the thought leadership of the information technology industry. Companies stand before an audience of 700 investors, business and corporate development executives, technology strategists, early adopters, and leading media to unveil their work. The six minutes on stage are amplified by the 12 hours of one-on-one time with attendees in the DEMO pavilion and the on-demand time of tens of thousands of people who over the course of the following months view the online video record of the on-stage presentation.

It's a common misconception that DEMO is a showcase of startup companies. It is not. It is a showcase of products - products coming to market by innovating companies, the majority of them very early stage. A company of any size needs to be ready for that kind of exposure. They need to be prepared to leverage the spotlight.

KEITH SHAW: WILL NUCLEAR WAR GET PEOPLE TO BACK UP DATA?

Probably not. Despite shouting-from-the-rooftops by those of us in the technology field, one in three U.S. consumers are still not backing up their data to protect digital files, and half of those people have experienced the loss of important data in the past, according to a new survey.

A Seagate-sponsored survey by Harris Interactive also showed that among those who don't back up, almost a third think that backup is too hard a process (29%), and 24% said they don't think it's important enough to worry about. Amazingly, 11% said they never knew they had to do it.

Look, I get it. Backup and storage isn't as sexy as an iPhone or Halo 3. It's also a lot like auto insurance - you don't think about it until something bad happens to you. But despite lots of high-profile cases of the loss of data (Francis Ford Coppola, for example, had an external storage drive stolen with a movie script on it and he didn't have a backup), people are still not getting the message.
