Network ArchitectureNetwork World's Network Architecture Newsletter, 10/25/07SMC intros LAN edge switchesBy Jeff CarusoSMC Networks this week started shipping the first of a new line of LAN edge switches, with more to come in November. The TigerSwitch Standalone 26-port 10/100/1000 Managed Switch will be followed by a 50-port version, as well as a 24-port version that supports Power over Ethernet. Power over Ethernet, or PoE, provides electrical power to some devices, such as IP phones, over the data lines. All of the new switches will have "combo" ports for fiber-optic uplinks. These allow for mini GBIC transceivers using 1000BASE-SX, -LX or -ZX for different distance requirements.
SMC says the switches also have IP clustering capabilities that allow up to 32 switches to be managed as a single system; with current products, that means up to 1,664 ports can be managed as one system. The new switches can be grouped with some of SMC's current Gigabit Ethernet and Fast Ethernet switches. SMC has a wide range of LAN switches, from stackables to standalones to a 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch. The switches, which SMC says could appeal to both small businesses and larger enterprises, feature application filtering, per-port bandwidth management and MAC-based security. They have a single-chip architecture which allows for wire-speed operation while keeping security measures intact. The 26-port switch is available now, with a suggested price of $1,000. The 50-port switch due out next month will have a suggested price of $1,300, while the 24-port PoE version will have a suggested price of $1,200. The optional gigabit transceivers range from $100 to $2,805.
