FROM THE NETWORK CORE TO THE NETWORK EDGE

Traffic management becomes critical as your network
infrastructure expands to support different types of traffic and
users. Most traffic management solutions have serious
limitations: too expensive, difficult to use, and overly taxing
on bandwidth. However ProCurve Networking by HP addresses these
requirements, overcomes the limitations of other solutions, and
gives you valuable insight into LAN performance. Click here to

Today's focus: What we could all learn from Windows Small
Business Server

By Dave Kearns

Last week, I talked about the roadmap for releases of
Microsoft's Windows Small Business Server. I realize that most
of you aren't using SBS as your primary network environment. But
some of you are, and even more of you are using many of the SBS
components, just in larger license sizes. SBS 2003, for example,
can include: Windows Server 2003; Windows SharePoint Services;
SQL Server 2000; Exchange Server 2003; and ISA Server 2000, but
because SBS is aimed at what's perceived as a less technically
oriented audience, there's a wealth of educational material
available. And it's available to everyone, SBS user or not.

For example, Microsoft holds frequent Web-based seminars that
are all archived so they can be viewed at your leisure. Among
the titles currently available at the Microsoft Webinars site
<http://www.microsoft.com/events/series/smallbusinessserver.mspx>
are:

* Small Business Server 2003: Networking Made Easy (Level 100
-introductory).
* Accessibility Options in Windows Small Business Server 2003
(Level 100).
* Get a Platform that is Easy To Grow With Today and Tomorrow
(Level 100).
* Remote Connectivity with Outlook and Other Server Tools (Level
100).
* Remote Technologies in Small Business Server 2003 (Level 100).

* Setting Up Users and Adding Client Computers on Small Business
Server 2003 (Level 100).
* Shared Fax Server in Windows Small Business Server (Level 200
- intermediate).
* Simple Faxing Capabilities with Small Business Server 2003
(Level 100).
* Small Business Server 2003: Total Cost of Ownership (Level
100)
* Small Business Server Series: Planning for Server Installation
(Level 200).
* The Advantages of Group Policies in SBS 2003 (Level 100).
* Top 10 Reasons to Use Windows Small Business Server 2003
(Level 100).
* Using Microsoft Exchange Server in Small Business Server 2003
(Level 100).
* Volume Shadow Copy in Windows Small Business Server 2003
(Level 100).
* Windows Small Business Server Series: Installation, Upgrade,
and Migration (Level 100).
* Small Business Server 2003 Technical Overview (Level 200).

While none of these are advanced sessions, even the level 100
(introductory, or "beginner" sessions) could be useful - how
long has it been since you formally studied what's available in
Windows networking? Maybe some things have changed, maybe
there's something you can learn.

The rest of the SBS Web site
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/default.mspx> is
also packed with information. While you may not need to read
"Small Business Server for Beginners," you might discover that
the SBS "Solution for Mobility," could solve a problem that's
been plaguing you. You'll never know unless you take a look. Do
that, soon.

IS IT THE NETWORK OR THE STORAGE THAT'S THE PROBLEM?

Midsize and larger businesses often find their IT topology has
become a complex mix of servers, networks and storage systems.
Many of these companies also route long-haul traffic over
fiber-based networks - metropolitan-area networks, WANs and
private optical networks. Who's responsible when a
storage-related problem occurs on a fiber network? For more,
