NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORKWORLD.COM

By Jeff Caruso

Yesterday there was apparently a clearance sale on networking
vendors. HP picked up both Peregrine Systems and AppIQ to help
fill out its management line. After eBay took Skype, Avaya
snapped up fellow VoIP vendor Nimcat. And Microsoft got further
into identity management with Alacris.

Q&A: Incoming user group president: Don't believe all those
nasty outsourcing rumors

Penske Vice President and CIO Stephen Pickett says one of his
children has entered the field he is in, while another did not,
telling him: "Dad, there aren't any jobs." As incoming president
of the Society for Information Management, Pickett says one of
his top goals through the 3,000-member user organization is to
make IT an enticing career path again. He spoke last week with
Network World News Editor Bob Brown.

IS IT THE NETWORK OR THE STORAGE THAT'S THE PROBLEM?

Midsize and larger businesses often find their IT topology has
become a complex mix of servers, networks and storage systems.
Many of these companies also route long-haul traffic over
fiber-based networks - metropolitan-area networks, WANs and
private optical networks. Who's responsible when a
storage-related problem occurs on a fiber network? For more,
