The dictionary defines innovation as "the act of introducing something new" or "a creation resulting from study and experimentation." Could innovation be used to describe the development of new ideas? If we look closer at "creation resulting from study and experimentation," we see that innovation really is a building of knowledge to develop something new and better. Let's look at RSS and how it has created opportunities for new products in the industry. Web Feed Reader is a great example. Extending Netscape's idea of building portals of headlines to mainstream news sites using RSS, Web Feed Reader is a browser-based RSS/ATOM feed reader. Web Feed Reader was created after two years of evaluating the needs of the publisher of feeds, user readability and experimenting with the delivery and display of feed content. Like many readers/aggregators on the market today Web Feed Reader receives, displays and updates feeds. Unlike other readers however, Web Feed Reader is browser-based. Users can read their feeds any where they have access to the Internet. No need to download any software. Web sites can offer their site visitors instant access to reader friendly XML feed content inside the Web Feed Reader right from their within their site. This ensures the visitor stays engaged on the site without leaving to read a feed. The surge of blogs, blog sites, news feeds and the increased demands of users to receive instant content and updates is sure to fuel many more innovative ideas like Web Feed Reader in the next few months or years.
