Today's focus: VPN Consortium tests VPN products' support of
Windows Server 2000, 2003

By Tim Greene

The VPN Consortium is offering the SSL File Access test, another
test of SSL VPN gear that certifies that the equipment can
access files to certain file servers.

In particular, successfully passing the test means that the
equipment can read and write files on Microsoft's Common
Internet File System making files available to other devices on
the network. This can represent a large chunk of network traffic
in environments where users access stored data - such as sales
information - as opposed to applications.

VPNC has already set up and run other tests of SSL gear
<http://www.networkworld.com/news/2004/1215vpnc.html?rl> and
plans more.

To pass the SSL File Access test, the gateway have to support
reading and writing files on both Windows Server 2000 and 2003.
While the two platforms are similar, there are enough
differences that an SSL box could support one and not the other,
says Paul Hoffman, director of VPNC who performed the tests.

Hoffman noted that the devices tested displayed the files in
varying ways, some just a list of available files and some that
imitate a desktop with icons. So potential customers looking to
buy this gear may want to check out these interfaces to
determine which is appropriate for their end users.

The products that have passed the SSL File Access test are:
* Caymas Version 2.7.2.
* Check Point, Connectra Version 2.
* Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrators Version 4.1.7.
* F5, FirePass Controller Version 5.2.1.
* Juniper Networks, NetScreen Instant Virtual Extranet Version
4.2.
* Nokia SSL VPN Version 3.0.
* Nortel VPN Gateway Version 5.0.
* Whale Communications e-Gap Version 3.1.

IS IT THE NETWORK OR THE STORAGE THAT'S THE PROBLEM?

Midsize and larger businesses often find their IT topology has
become a complex mix of servers, networks and storage systems.
Many of these companies also route long-haul traffic over
fiber-based networks - metropolitan-area networks, WANs and
private optical networks. Who's responsible when a
storage-related problem occurs on a fiber network? For more,
