Today's focus: Verizon cranks EV-DO; hot spots hit 70,000;
Sprint Nextel teams with NFL

By Keith Shaw

Today we've got a potpourri of news: Verizon Wireless pushes the
envelope on EV-DO, Wi-Fi hot spots take over the world, and
Sprint Nextel inks a deal with the NFL.

Verizon Wireless and Lucent announced they have completed a
live, over-the-air call using CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO Revision A
technology. Current EV-DO speeds are about 400K to 700K bit/sec
on average. Revision A is designed to increase the efficiency,
data speeds and capacity of EV-DO networks, letting users
receive data at speeds up to 3.1M bit/sec, and to send data at
speeds up to 1.8M bit/sec, theoretically.

The companies said they will conduct more trials in early 2006.
These trials will address the delivery of VoIP, as well as
"blended lifestyle" services and applications that combine
voice, data and video capabilities. One of those capabilities
would be mobile video telephony.

Hmm, mobile video telephony - this can only mean that in the
future, we'll be seeing people walking around the streets
holding their cell phone two feet in front of them and talking.
I can't wait. Still, the speed increases sound promising,
although I'm sure this speed boost will come with a cost boost.

There are almost 70,000 Wi-Fi hot spots in the world, according
to the latest report from JiWire. In July 2005 the company
reported 69,859 Wi-Fi hot spots in 102 countries. The U.S. still
dominates, with 28,916 hot spots, with the U.K. (10,594) and
Germany (6,323) in second and third, respectively. In terms of
cities, however, London (1,289), Tokyo (1,204) and Paris (782)
dominate. New York has 583 hot spots, good enough for sixth on
the list.

It's still tougher to find a free hot spot than a paid one -
there were 6,149 free locations as of July 2005, compared with
63,710 paid locations.

As we get closer to the NFL season kickoff, get ready to see a
lot more branding and advertisements from Sprint Nextel (yes,
the merger is official and that's the new name). Sprint Nextel
and the NFL announced that Sprint would be the official wireless
telecommunications service sponsor of the NFL.

Included in the arrangement is a whole bunch of new content and
new formats that combine mobile computing and football,
including:

Live video - programming from the NFL Network, including the
"Total Access" show, will be made available to mobile devices.

On-demand video - NFL Films' archive will be made available to
Sprint customers. In addition, Sprint and the NFL will partner
up to produce original content.

Other content includes fantasy football management, ring tones,
screen savers, wallpaper, polls, sweepstakes and other
"branding" opportunities.
