Network World's Cisco News Alert, 08/15/07

Cisco: SONA promises advanced next-generation networks, 08/14/07: Cisco introduced its Services Oriented Network Architecture less than two years ago, and now the company says the SONA concept in action will reduce corporate costs and move customers toward virtualized services, including security, voice, mobility, applications, management, processing and storage -- with the network as the common facet. Bill Ruh, vice president of Advanced Services at Cisco, recently discussed with Network World Senior Editor Denise Dubie about why network engineers should be already be incorporating the principles of SONA into their network design and how Cisco's services-oriented architecture (SOA) would help them better architect and navigate tomorrow's next-generation networks.

DePaul University opts for a multivendor IP telephony system, 08/13/07:About two years ago, DePaul University’s IT staff began plans to replace its Nortel 81 and Meridian Mail PBX communications systems that serve some 4,500 users at the university. Like many conversions, the shift to IP telephony (IPT) was designed to take several years and was going to be phased in by user-group. The new messaging system needed to provide interworking between the new IPT system and the legacy TDM PBX and it needed to provide full integration with Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory.

Today on Cisco Subnet: Cisco is putting heavy emphasis on its all-singing, all-dancing SONA framework. Will you? Working 15 hours on a Saturday is no fun, but that's not the case when you're spending that time seeing your network design come to life, says blogger Michael Morris. Blogger Brad Reese uncovers some horror stories from recent Cisco partner networking career fairs. IP routing expert Jeff Doyle dives deeper into responsible and safe external BGP configuration.
