The Perfect Marriage for Virtualization

Discover how coupling blade servers with a virtual infrastructure can cut costs and add efficiencies.

Perfect Marriage
Compliments of Computerworld and CDW

In recent years the push toward more efficient computing platforms has forced businesses to venture beyond basic servers and systems. In the quest to manage resources more effectively, save data center space, reduce IT administrative tasks, and go "green", many organizations have turned to virtualization.

Windows 7 Speeds Browser Performance
It's a bit of a surprise but BetaNews.com is reporting  their testing shows Windows 7 RC speeds up browser performance. IE specifically picks up the pace by about 12%. Why is this happening? I don't think we know those details. I wonder if Microsoft might have revamped the TCP stack, and if so we should see a speed up in other network applications.

“The Larry Awards” Interop Las Vegas Awards for Best Presentation
Chaffin: I decided to have a little fun and send some emails to friends who attended Interop to get their opinions on who had the best presentations from any technology. The name of the awards came from a few people who thought my name should be the award (sounds good to me). The votes were very different from what I thought and we had many discussions, but we do have our winner for this year listed below. Also I have added some comments that came back about what they did not like. Maybe this will help vendors do better next year.

Light traffic, modest Cisco presence mark Vegas Interop
A big theme at this year's Interop conference in Las Vegas was cloud computing, the concept of turning physical data center assets and resources into a virtualized service infrastructure. But while cloud computing may be the silver lining around a dour IT economy, the clouds are gray and dreary around Interop, the networking industry's biggest trade show.

Interop 2009: Wireless Highlights from the Show Floor
While I work primarily on the Mobile Business Conference at Interop, there are always a few interesting items to be found at the Expo, aka the show floor. The event appeared quite well-attended, and at times even crowded, a bit surprising given the downbeat economy. And, being an omnibus networking event, one had to dig a little to get to the wireless stuff - but I found a few interesting items, as follows:

Evolution of Ethernet
Evolution of Ethernet From 3Mbps over shared coax to 40/100Gbps over fiber…and beyond.

DNS news and tips
DNS is not secure and is extremely vulnerable. DNS is at the core of every connection we make on the Internet. While some servers are indeed vulnerable, because of inadequate management or knowledge, the real threat is from the protocol itself and how data is easily subverted or faked as it moves around the internet.

VOIP Eavesdropping with OREKA

This is Network World's Cisco Subnet news alert in which we focus on the top items from Cisco Subnet, your daily source for Cisco news, blogs, discussion items, security alerts, giveaways and more.

Blogger Jimmy Ray Purser writes, "Eavesdropping VOIP is the equivalent of 'Just wait until your Father gets home' on the network. When folks talk about VOIP security they tend to immediately go straight to eavesdropping without considering the more valuable and resellable vectors like toll fraud. But without a doubt, eavesdropping is a great demo to do at a trade show or customer pre-sales call. Man, the purchase orders will just start flying out of pockets! Let's just get real here, eavesdropping is a very time consuming process for a low yield. Personally, I will take email over voice for information stealing."

More Google 'beta' apps leaving the nest?
Regular readers may recall a post from last fall that showed nearly half of 49 Google products carried a "beta" tag, including some golden oldies such as Gmail. The item drew quite a bit of attention, in part because Google's explanation for the practice made very little sense. Now it seems the search giant is going to take the training wheels off more of its applications, according to a story from the IDG News Service.

QoS in Switches: CoS Trust Boundaries
Cisco switches perform most Quality of Service (QoS) operations in hardware, while routers perform QoS functions in software. It is best practice to use the switch to perform deep packet classification and marking functionality on the switches. The router will need to re-classify the packet, but the classification can be on the DSCP marking rather than a transport layer port number. Most Cisco switches do not support the NBAR classification mechanism which can look into the layer 7 header of a packet (up to 400 bytes).

Partnership

Good Day,

With warm heart I offer my friendship and greetings hoping that this email will meet you in good times' know this email might be strange or surprising to you because we have not met personally or had any contact in the past but I humbly ask you to take due consideration of it's importance and the benefit it will bring to you and my family. I am writing you to solicit your co-operation in a multi million dollars investment.

My name is George Chol Garang , the eldest son of Late Dr. John Garang ,I am presently seeking political asylum here in Denmark for fear of my live .My late father John Garang was the leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Army that fought the Khartoum government of Sudan for 21 years until 09 July 2005 when he was made the first vice president of Sudan after the Kenyan peace accord.

Three weeks after(30 July 2005)he was killed when he was returning from Uganda on the Ugandan presidential helicopter who is an ally to the Sudanese president Oman el Bashir during the civil war against the people of south Sudan. My late father was set up to believe all is well, My mother received a top secret information to find a way to smuggle me out of the country because the Khartoum Government is planning to kill me and my family.

Oil was discovered in southern Sudan in 1978, which erupted the civil war in 1983involving the government forces and the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement under the leadership of my late father. During the war, the oil wells were hole control by Sudanese People's Liberation Army under the leadership of my late father.

I am writing you in absolute confidence primarily to seek your assistance to secure my father's fund deposited in Europe, my Late father's deposited Sixteen Million United States Dollars cash ($16,000.000.00) now in the custody the vault of a Private Finance firm in Europe. Before my father's death, he told me about the deposit of the funds and he told me in case he dies I should find a way to get the funds out and my suffering people of Darfur and the Southern Sudanese should benefit from the funds and invest part of it into a profitable investment that will benefit my family and yours. I have all the documents concerning the deposit of this fund.

I am unable to stand on behalf of my late father because of my situation now as an asylum seeker and my status here as an asylum seeker do not permit me to make any move towards the fund. For your time and assistance, I have decided that 20% of the total amount will be for your effort and another 5 % to cover all the expenses that may occur during this business transaction and the rest, we both have to put our heads together and invest it into a profitable business.
