LAS VEGAS -- One big obstacle to SaaS vendors getting their applications adopted more widely is that so many of them don't offer open APIs. Offering APIs is crucial for vendors to get their applications supported by channel partners and for customers looking to integrate SaaS offerings with legacy applications, said participants on the panel for a lively but lightly attended session Tuesday at Interop in Las Vegas dubbed "Herding cats: Managing SaaS sprawl." 

Web attack that poisons Google results gets worse
A new attack that peppers Google search results with malicious links is spreading quickly, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned on Monday. The attack, which has intensified in recent days, can be found on several thousand legitimate Web sites, according to security experts. It targets known flaws in Adobe's software and uses them to install a malicious program on victims' machines, CERT said.

Virtualization cost savings hard to come by, Interop survey finds
LAS VEGAS -- Despite the reported benefits of virtualization, a majority of IT managers polled at Interop this week say they experience problems with the technology and don't always realize the cost benefit.

Video focuses on victims of e-mail scam
A new documentary-style video, "HCommerce: The Business of Hacking You," puts the focus on the travails of the Spears family of Portland, Ore., which lost about $400,000 when Janella Spears fell for a complex e-mail scam. 

SolarWinds files for IPO
SolarWinds this week filed its initial public offering that would be worth $139 million and Wednesday more than 12 million of the network and systems management software maker's shares will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Sprint CEO preaches patience at JP Morgan tech conference
Acknowledging that his company's brand has taken some damage in recent years, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said Tuesday that the company was slowly but steadily rebuilding its reputation as a wireless carrier. 

Novell's SLED 11 to ship with Active Directory gateway technology
Likewise Tuesday said its software for bridging Linux desktops and Microsoft's Active Directory will now be included with Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11. 

Hard drive missing from US National Archives
A hard drive containing personal information of White House staff and visitors during former U.S. President Bill Clinton's administration is missing from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, the agency said.
