Top pick of the week

The right free software strategy for 2009
"Recently a co-worker turned me onto Virtual CloneDrive, free software that mounts ISO images as virtual hard drives," writes Converging on Microsoft blogger Mitchell Ashley. "I began using the free software thinking what a great little tool it was -- very handy and works without a hitch. My experience with that free software was so positive, it unconsciously spilled over onto the software's creator, Slysoft. To make a long story short, I wound up buying three of the company's products: AnyDVD HD, CloneDVD, CloneDVD Mobile."

Randy Muller: All about Microsoft Certifications
Are you validated by a certification?
Many professions require you to pass some sort of a qualification or certification test to enter your chosen field – whether it be the bar exam or exams to earn your Masters or PhD. So why is there such contention in the IT community concerning certifications?

Windows Server 2008: finally friendly for drivers
Both Vista and Server 2008 have earned a reputation for high uptime if the device drivers work well. Outside of the virtual PC/virtual server environment (which seems to suffer many BSODs) crashing only seems to occur when drivers are buggy or not updated for the operating system.

How to appear offline in Office Communications Server 2007
Here's a tip regarding Microsoft Office Communicator (MOC), the OCS client. One of the things I thought was missing from MOC was the ability to appear offline. It's a little different than DND (do not disturb). Sometimes you just don't want anyone to know you're there.
