Big Blue's acquisition of the Israeli start-up as the year has barely begun is sure to bolster its storage business. Industry pundits have ascribed the acquisition for two reasons: to replace IBM's System Storage DS8000 or provide a grid-like storage for Web 2.0 applications such as digital content. Hitachi unveils first laptop 500GB drive, 01/03/08 Hitachi has developed a 500G-byte hard-disk drive for laptop computers, due to be announced Thursday. The Travelstar 5K500, which is the highest capacity drive yet developed for portable PCs, is due to begin shipping in February and should go some way towards quenching user thirst for storage space.
