CHRIS SHIPLEY: TIRED OF WEB 2.0 HYPE? REAL VALUE IS COMING
Whatever happened to the dog days of summer? My colleagues at DEMO and Guidewire Group have been running flat out since the Fourth of July to prepare what is shaping up to be the biggest and most impactful DEMOfall events ever.
I confess I've been a little surprised. At a time when so much attention is being paid to the one-hit-wonders of the Web 2.0 world, I was convinced we would see a parade of widgets and mash-ups and loosely coupled social networks. We would see, I was afraid, hundreds of features masquerading as companies, hoping to grab enough fan base to pass themselves off as a growing enterprise just long enough to catch the eye of one of the Big Players who would drop some cash on them in a quick flip.
I wasn't quite ready to write the obituary on true innovation, but I was definitely prepared to throw a bucket of reality on the hype-meisters who are passing off luck and timing as state-of-the-art technology.
Wow, have I been surprised.

KEITH SHAW: APPLE: THE HOT NEW CONVERTIBLE
It's a good time to be an Apple fan – the iPhone launched with media coverage not seen since the moon landing, the stock price has more than doubled over the past 12 months, and the "Fake Steve Jobs" site had Silicon Valley buzzing for the past 14 months with everyone trying to guess who he was (this week, he was unmasked to be Daniel Lyons, an editor at Forbes). There's probably a "Fake Bill Gates" blog out there, but it certainly isn't as buzz-worthy as the FSJ site was.
This week, the momentum for Apple continued, as the Cupertino company launched a new series of iMac desktop systems, updated its iLife suite of personal applications and its iWork suite of productivity applications.
Even John Dvorak, a self-proclaimed anti-Mac guy, has gotten an Apple crush. "I have noticed that I've been recommending the machine to friends and neighbors when they want to know what kind of system they should buy," Dvorak writes in his July 25, 2007, column.
Meanwhile, it can't be a great time to be a Microsoft fan.
