CHRIS SHIPLEY: COMPANY LIVES ITS 'GO GREEN' PLEDGE
You may remember Streamload, the hosted media platform that launched at DEMOfall 2005, and if you were at that edition of the conference, you may have met Mike Corrales, an energetic, bright young man who drove market strategy for the company at that time. Today, Mike is pouring all that energy into a new project: Greenest Host (http://www.greenesthost.com).
This progressive, green-powered Internet hosting service throws open its environmentally conscious doors (and servers) this week, inviting those who talk a good game about energy conservation to live their convictions by hosting their web sites and services at this 100% solar-powered Web hosting facility. Located just outside San Diego, Greenest Host generates all its power from solar panels on premises. Excess power charges the backup batteries that sustain the facility in the event of a power outage. Tertiary power is generated from clean-burning propane generators, and only as a last resort ? but still a one-level more than most hosting services ? the facility can switch over to the power grid if absolutely necessary.
The Greenest Host facility was designed from the outset with energy efficiency in mind. Servers, which run on power-conserving AMD chips, are virtualized to optimize hardware use. The environment uses Frius cooling technology to reduce reliance on traditional air conditioning. They?re even planning to install a green room on the steel building to further reduce heating and cooling requirements.

KEITH SHAW: CAN BUZZWIRE SUCCEED IN MOBILE MULTIMEDIA?
Being able to listen to audio or watch video on your cell phone isn't something new ? most of the major carriers have been offering services for months, if not years. The problem is getting customers to sign up for and use the service. Mobile multimedia streaming tends to be on the low side of services that cell phone owners are buying into. While users are watching video and listening to music in droves at their PCs, they're not doing so on their mobile phones.
So what makes startup Buzzwire think they can succeed in the mobile multimedia space, where carriers and other companies have yet to make a splash?
I recently chatted with John Kelley, chief marketing officer of Buzzwire, about what separates Buzzwire, which launched its beta preview of its new streaming audio and video service, this week. Kelley says Buzzwire is handling mobile streaming media differently than the major carriers.
