The V-word strike data protection

By Deni Connor

Since the V-word entered the corporate lingo, storage vendors have been busy making products that support server “virtualization” environments.

Marathon Technologies launched its v-Available initiative to link its everRun software with XenEnterprise. It hopes to bring mainframe-class availability to virtual server environments. Products resulting from the initiative are expected to be available in the third quarter of this year. Among them are DR for XenEnterprise and v-Availability Assessment, Design & Implementation Services, a services offering. Late next year Marathon plans to roll out everRun for XenEnterprise.

EMC last week announced the PowerPath Migration Enabler, which ensures server uptime during VMware virtualization deployments. An optional module for its high availability PowerPath software, Migration Enable start at $14,640 per storage array.

SteelEye Technology recently introduced the availability of SteelEye Protection Suite for VMware Infrastructure 3, a product that supports clustering physical and virtual servers for high availability, data protection and disaster recovery. SteelEye LifeKeeper provides protection against operating system and application failures within the virtual machine. LifeKeeper monitors the entire virtual machine environment and can perform both administrator-initiated stop/resume of ESX Server virtual machines and fully automated LifeKeeper-initiated recovery, based on user-defined policies, to a paired physical server.

Symantec enhanced it Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0 data protection product recently with support for Microsoft Vista, x64-bit platforms, VMware ESX Server and Microsoft Virtual Server.

Finally, STORServer unveiled its new STORServer VCB Appliance, what the company claims is the first backup appliance to protect VMware implementations. The new software-based appliance allows VMware implementations. The STORServer VCB Appliance incorporates VMware Consolidated Backup to backup virtual servers, eliminating the need to have individual agents on each virtual server. IT administrators can set schedules for each virtual machine to be backed up. Pricing for the STORServer VCB Appliance will start at $20,000.
