The Internet of Things at home: Why we should pay attention
What is the Internet of Things (IoT), exactly? If you're a consumer, then the first thing that leaps to mind might be a Nest Wi-Fi thermostat, or perhaps those smart health bands that let you monitor your activity level from an app on your smartphone. That's part of it. But if you're an engineer, you might think of the smart sensors that General Electric embeds in locomotives and wind turbines, while a city manager might be considering smart parking meters, and a hospital administrator might envision swallowable smart pill sensors that monitor how much medication you've taken or blood pressure cuffs and blood glucose monitors that can monitor patient health in the field and wirelessly stream updates into clinical systems. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Those Parisians make exceptions for nobody.” “The @richardbranson model for such situations is to just buy the place :-).”  The “real life Seinfeld” reference, in case you didn’t know, is a nod to the notorious “Soup Nazi.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Hungry ants knock out FiOS service … again
Everyone keeps asking if the ants actually ate their way through the fiber optic cable and I do not know the answer. What is certain is that they chewed through the outer casing and caused enough damage to knock out TV, phone and Internet service to my house: the Verizon triple no-play.I also know that it takes about five years for ants to accomplish such a task, because the same thing happened in June 2009.The box housing the cable splice that brings FiOS into my home is located across the street about five feet up on a utility pole. When the Verizon technician opened the box it was filled with hundreds of ants (I had actually forgotten about the earlier ant episode, but he clearly expected them to be there). And when he shooed away enough of the critters to get a look inside, the red glow of a stripped fiber optic cable was clearly visible. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Turning network resource management on its head through software-defined WANs
Although much of the Software Defined Networking discussion to date has been about the data center, software-defined WANs (SDW) also show great promise. In essence, an SDW enables IT teams to manage network services by decoupling the system that makes decisions about where traffic is sent (the control plane) from the underlying systems that forward traffic to the selected destination (the data plane). This can deliver greater simplicity, security and resiliency, which in turn can lead to lower operational expense (OpEx) and capital expense (CapEx). Read More
