Racketeering case against Microsoft, Best Buy revived
Microsoft and Best Buy are facing racketeering charges in a case first brought seven years ago that alleged consumers had MSN accounts activated and were charged for them without their knowledge when they purchased new PCs.

CIOs share secrets of getting IT some respect
The theme of getting more respect for IT was pervasive at this week’s CIO Forum, a gathering of 300-plus CIOs and other high-level IT executives that takes place at sea aboard the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship sailing out of New York City.

Enterprise notebooks tout new wireless LAN features
A trio of notebook makers have unveiled lighter, faster PCs, including several with optional cellular interfaces and Intel’s latest wireless LAN technology, aimed at the enterprise mobile market. Intel has integrated some existing PC management features for enterprise IT groups into the newest edition of its Centrino Pro WLAN technology. Gateway, HP and Lenovo are touting improved battery life, with changes that can deliver eight to12 hours of computing life, depending on the applications used.

Verizon anxious to fight for government accounts
Verizon Business says it’s ready to take on as much of the federal government’s business as it can win. Verizon, AT&T and Qwest in March won the opportunity to bid on the federal government’s $20 billion, 10-year, Networx Universal contract. Two months later, Verizon says it’s eager to get on with the next phases of actually winning and delivering some of the 50 Networx services to the more than 135 agencies spanning 190 countries that will acquire telecommunications services via this contract.

IRS wants data on users from Internet firms
The Center for Democracy and Technology is sounding an early warning on a proposal in the president's 2008 budget that would require Internet businesses like eBay and Amazon.com to collect personal data on their customers and share it with the Internal Revenue Service.

Mac share of surfers doubles in 8 months
The portion of people surfing the Web using a Mac has doubled in the past eight months, an Internet metrics analyst said Tuesday, and represents an audience that can't be ignored by Web application developers.
