Today's focus: Networking stories from IT professionals

I'd like to use today's issue to point to a couple recent
stories we ran in Network World that I think you'll find
interesting.

The first relates the story of IT consultant Michael Koontz, who
was charged with the task of running a Category-5e cable between
offices. The offices were 745 feet apart - which is more than
twice the distance for which the cable is rated. Plus, the area
through which he had to run the cable was heavily trafficked by
forklifts, and they ran over the cable a couple of times.

Another story out of the series - which appeared in Network
World's "You" Issue - talks about the networking involved in
bringing "Star Wars: Episode III" to the screen. The manager of
network operations at Lucasfilm compares the huge advances in
the network since Episode I was created, advances that make its
LAN "the largest single 10G interconnect in the country."

Lastly, I want to mention an article I wrote for the You Issue.
I got a chance to visit the plant of FreshDirect, a company that
lets people order groceries online and then delivers them to
their door. There are many different IT elements involved - to
maintain the Web site, to bring the orders to the plant, to
direct the orders to all the different specialists (butchers,
bakers, and so forth), and to make sure the orders get on the
right trucks. Anyway, I found the whole thing fascinating, and
