"The people to fear are not those who disagree with you, but
those who disagree with you and are too cowardly to let you
know."

Napoleon Bonaparte

Dear Vorticians,

I'm back from the land of black bears, black flies and
blueberries, and I've posted the following items in the Vortex
blog for you this week. As always, I welcome your feedback,
either in the blog comment area or via email at
mailto:jgallant@vortex.net. I'm particularly interested in your
views on our first item of discussion.

- Former Financial Times tech writer Tom Foremski runs an
insightful, useful Web site called SiliconValleyWatcher.com -
some of you may already peruse it regularly. Geoffrey Moore and I
met with Tom recently to talk about the enterprise IT market and
Vortex 05. Tom's a smart guy, but we're 180 degrees away from
each other on the future of enterprise IT. For Tom, IT is "deadly
dull" and it's never provided a competitive edge to anyone. We
wrestle over these ideas in a series of postings. Read 'em and
share your insights. Start with

then take a gander at

- Also, before leaving on vacation I described for you a
terrific panel discussion that Geoff and I conducted with Cisco's
Randy Pond and Fred Matteson of Fireman's Fund. You can find the
audio for this session here:

That's it for now. Be in touch. mailto:jgallant@vortex.net

Bye.

Executive Spotlight at VORTEX: Matthew J. Szulik, Chairman, CEO
and President, Red Hat

VORTEX 2005: Setting the IT Agenda
Breakthrough to Value
Oct. 24-26 at the Palace Hotel, San Francisco
*********************************************************
The Open Source movement has shocked a generation of IT leaders
by developing from a free-wheeling crowd of mavericks to, well, a
free-wheeling crowd of mavericks that have embraced
accountability, reliability, availability and most importantly,
mission-critical responsibility. How did this happen, how far can
IT organizations trust open source solutions today, and where are
they headed in the near future?

We'll discuss all these issues with Matt Szulik, the CEO of Red
Hat Software, and a leader in providing enterprise-oriented
maintenance services for open source software to global
corporations.

Register by Sept. 16, 2005 and save! We welcome all Vorticians to
join us at VORTEX 2005 and are pleased to offer you a special
registration rate of $2,995(a $500 savings).
