NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORKWORLD.COM
By Sheryl Hodge
An Austrian hacker calling himself "Second Part To Hell" (and
who also goes by the name Mario) earned the dubious distinction
of writing what are thought to be the first known viruses for
Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. Written in July, the
viruses take advantage of a new command shell, codenamed Monad,
that is included in the Windows Vista beta code.

EMC stresses end-to-end security
EMC is looking to focus on providing end-to-end security for its
customers and deliver more management capabilities in its
software offerings, according to executives speaking at the
company's analyst day in New York on Thursday. Later that day
EMC's head honcho sat down with IDG News Service's China
Martens. Tucci says that customers are clamoring for the company
to do more on the security front and is trying to address those
concerns with a mixture of current in-house technologies,
partnerships and acquisitions. He doesn't believe the market is
ready for storage virtualization yet.

Microsoft to release 'critical' patches next week
Microsoft next Tuesday will release six software patches, which
the company likes to call updates, covering flaws in its Windows
operating system. The patches will come as part of the company's
regular monthly patch release cycle. The company also is
planning to release an updated version of its Microsoft Windows
Malicious Software Removal Tool, and a nonsecurity update for
Windows.
