Today's focus: Dell servers eye Linux

By Deni Connor

Dell made inroads into the Linux server space last week at
LinuxWorld in San Francisco.

The company extended its servers into the Linux market with the
announcement that it would support the LAMP stack, MySQL Network
and JBoss Networks. LAMP is an open source Web platform that
includes Linux, the Apache Web server, the MySQL database and
Perl, Phython or PHP. Customers can now get subscriptions to the
MySQL Network and JBoss Network support from Dell. The Linux in
the LAMP stack is either Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Novell SUSE
Linux Enterprise Server

The company also announced two new servers - the PowerEdge 830
and 850 - which use dual-core technology. In dual-core, two
processors are placed in a single socket, thus saving on power
consumption and increasing multitasking performance
<http://www.networkworld.com/news/2005/080805-linuxworld.html>.

The 830 and 850 have twice the memory of their predecessors and
a choice of three different processors. They are available with
a 2.53-GHz Intel Celeron, 2.8- or 3.6-GHz Intel P4 or a 3.0- or
3.2-GHz Intel Pentium D dual-core processor.

The PowerEdge 8501 has 79% better performance than the PowerEdge
750.1, according to Dell's claims; the PowerEdge 8302 has a 60%
performance increase over the PowerEdge 900.2.

The 830 is designed for workgroups within enterprise-size
businesses or remote offices. It is available in a tower
configuration.

The 850 is a 1U high rack-mount server designed for small
business or cost-sensitive data center customers.

In addition, the PowerEdge 830 has optional hot-plug SCSI RAID
arrays; the PowerEdge 850 uses PCI-Express and has dual embedded
Gigabit Ethernet adapters. Both servers support up to 8 G bytes
of RAM and Serial ATA or U320 SCSI drives.

Both servers ship with Dell's OpenManage Suite, whose Web-based
interface lets IT administrators remotely manage and configure
the servers. They support Red Hat, SuSE Linux and Windows Server
2003.

The Dell PowerEdge 830 and 850 are expected to be available this
month starting at $699 and $749, respectively.
