Learn More Google opens up on its SDN At this week’s Open Network Summit, Google spoke for the first time publicly about its custom data center network. For nearly a decade, we’ve been hearing, reading and writing about how Google was building its own switches and writing its own software to handle the tremendous traffic load on its search engine and applications because vendor offerings were either not up to the task, too expensive, or both. This week we found out how they did it. In a keynote presentation at ONS, Amin Vahdat, Google Fellow and Technical Lead for Networking, described the company’s data center network architecture, capabilities and capacity for a rapt audience thirsting for information on software-defined networking implementations and experiences. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More Why your business should upgrade to 802.11AC Wave 2 Wi-Fi If you're a fan of 70s music, particularly Canadian artists, you are probably familiar with the great singer Burton Cummings. In the late 70s he released a song called "My own way to rock" that started: "Revving up my engine, like a 747 mama, shiny, lanky, long and lean, and I'm mean." When Cummings wrote this song, I'm sure he was talking about the impact of digital transformation that would come 30 years later and how businesses need to be lean, mean, agile machines to leapfrog the competition. One of the important factors in being able to rev up the business engine is that things need to be done faster than ever before. Speed is an important component for the digitization of businesses, as now we need to get information, make decisions, and serve customers faster than ever before. This is particularly true for the wireless network, as it has become the foundation for new engagement models. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More IDG Contributor Network: Speedier 5.4-Gigabit Wi-Fi routers coming this year It seems like I was only just writing about the new, up-to-3.2 Gbps Wi-Fi routers, such as the drone look-alike D-Link DIR-890L.In fact, it was all of six-months ago, in my post, "Is it time to move to beamforming 802.11ac?"Well, that generation of wireless networking gear using beamforming and combining multiple bands, is about to be superseded. Microprocessor-maker Broadcom has launched new 5.4 Gbps-capable chips that will appear in routers later this year.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More Proposed solutions for fixing Reserve Windows 10 problems I’ve been bombarded in real life with reserve Windows 10 app problems and found out it’s not always as simple as looking for the icon on the right side of the taskbar. Some people with compatible PCs running genuine copies of Windows have run Windows Update only to have nothing new offered. Yet they still haven’t been notified by the Get Windows 10 app. So here are a few examples of what it took to get them that app.Maybe you shouldn’t be in a wild hurry to be among the first to download and install the officially released Windows 10, just in case there’s still “several bugs” needing fixed. Nevertheless, if you are chomping at the bit and you don’t have the Windows icon to reserve Windows 10:To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More WHITE PAPER: Citrix Systems

Learn More How to sell the Internet of Things to consumers Despite the tech industry's best efforts over the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has only slowly begun to gain a foothold in consumer markets. Consumers do, however, still represent a massive opportunity for IoT, and the companies in this space will be paying close attention to consumer acceptance of the technology.Today, machine-to-machine company ThroughTek released results from its recent consumer survey on the IoT and smart home technology. The survey was conducted last month by research firm YouGov, and included 1,181 U.S. adults.See also: Smart home hacking is easier than you think Consumers appear to be growing more optimistic about the IoT in the near future. The thing is, Apple during this trial period will not be paying any royalties to music labels. In exchange for this temporary reprieve, Apple has agreed to pay music labels a higher royalty rate once the trial period expires. While this compromise works for some, not every one is on board.According to The Telegraph, Andy Heath, who currently serves as the head of UK Music, isn't keen on the idea at all, claiming that it will "literally put people out of business."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More Duqu 2.0 attackers used legitimate digital certificate issued by Foxconn to sign driver Should we still trust digital certificates as a reliable tool for computer code validation? Maybe not as Kaspersky Lab’s newest Duqu 2.0 analysis found that the attackers used stolen digital certificates issued to Foxconn to sneak their malware under security radar.Kaspersky Lab researchers said on Monday: The attackers created an unusual persistence module which they deploy on compromised networks. It serves a double function – it also supports a hidden C&C communication scheme. This organization-level persistence is achieved by a driver that is installed as a normal system service. On 64-bit systems, this implies a strict requirement for an Authenticode digital signature. We have seen two such persistence drivers deployed in the course of attacks. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More VMware takes on Microsoft in the identity management space Microsoft and VMware seem to be continuing on their collision course, and this time it's VMware's turn to take a shot.
