From Bradley Mitchell, your Guide to Computer Networking
According to recent news reports, Europe is about to run out of IPv4 addresses, for real this time. It's only been about a bazillion years since folks have been talking about the takeover of IPv6, so every time something happens that somewhat resembles progress along that line, it's sure to make news.

What Is Internet Protocol version 6?
One simple answer: It's the easiest way to handle the explosion in numbers of phones and other devices connecting to the Internet now and in the future. Of course, I always also get asked: What Happened to IPv5?

IP Addresses and Routine Monitoring of Online File Sharing
Copyright enforcement authorities have had some success in the past tracking down illegal file sharers by their IP addresses. These have traditionally been addresses of the IPv4 kind. Will moving to IPv6 change how online monitoring works? Nope.

How to Change Your IP Address
With some effort, it is possible, in some situations, to change the IP address your network is using. This can be helpful in working around certain kinds of technical issues with a network. It may not be as helpful as you think, though.

READERS RESPOND: Which VPN Client Do You Use (and Why)?
Rather than trying to (maybe) change your IP address all the time, it's usually more practical to try hiding it. VPN services are one common way to obtain an anonymous IP address. One reason people want these is to be able to access Web sites otherwise restricted to people in certain countries. Why do you use VPNs?
