EMC’s new Symmetrix array targets virtual data centers EMC is unveiling a new Symmetrix storage array designed to support heavily virtualized data centers with hundreds of petabytes of storage and mass quantities of virtual servers. Of heroes and wonks in the IT ranks A few weeks back, one of my clients remarked that he architected his data center network so as to "avoid the need for heroes." His point was that if the network were sufficiently robust, there would be no need for 3 a.m. heroics to keep things running. One Cloud Cost Advantage That May Be Irresistible A couple of interesting whitepapers crossed my desk over the past week whose message can be boiled down to a simple proposition: cloud providers can achieve economies of scale that preclude almost any organization's data center from being cost-competitive. Doing the math on one real-life example, a Microsoft data center, gets pretty interesting. CIOs split on Cisco blades vs. HP networking: survey A UBS survey of just over 100 CIOs found an even split on whether Cisco and its new blades, or HP's networking momentum would have greater success over the next five years. Ninety-four of the 104 CIOs surveyed were from the U.S. and Europe. Monitor devices, go green and save money Ron Barrett has found ServersCheck Monitoring Appliance, which would allow a network administrator to monitor up to 100 devices with a single appliance that is energy efficient, loaded with features, easy to manage and…fits in the palm of your hand. One foot on the ground and one in the clouds The early adopter "cloud crowd" makes the most headlines, but they're only the tip of the small business iceberg. Looking at various data storage vendor customer numbers has convinced me 90% of small businesses are still mostly land (or LAN) based. Some people don't yet trust Internet data storage, and some like to wear data storage suspenders with their data storage belts. The good news for both? Options for combo cloud and local storage hybrids continue to grow. U.K. government failing to motivate over carbon cuts The U.K. government is not motivating the industry to reduce its carbon emissions, despite the looming possibility that British companies may need to start to reporting on their carbon emissions by 2012. Hard drive lives double life Seagate's FreeAgent Theater HD media player - the cool, the caveats, and the dirty little secret. Shadow Copies of... Everything? In his Windows Server 2008 blog, Glenn Weadock reviewed in two parts Volume Shadowcopy Service, which lets you make periodic snapshots of a server volume so that users with Windows XP or Vista can access “previous versions” of files or folders that were stored on network shares. It’s kind of like a Recycle Bin for the network. Microsoft promises to reduce prices for cloud WS2008 licenses Microsoft will be bowing to pressure from Amazon and offering a simpler, cheaper Windows cloud hosting licensing deal to Amazon and others, promises Bob Muglia. New Microsoft commercial takes another jab at Apple Microsoft's third commercial in its "Laptop Hunter" series invariably finds these "laptop hunters" taking time out of their shopping experience to stick it to Apple, or more specifically, to Mac users themselves. April giveaways galore Cisco Subnet and Microsoft Subnet are giving away training courses from Global Knowledge, valued at $2,995 and $3,495, and have copies of three hot books up for grabs: CCVP CIPT2 Quick Reference by Anthony Sequeira, Microsoft Voice Unified Communications by Joe Schurman and Microsoft Office 2007 On Demand by Steve Johnson.
