CHRIS SHIPLEY
HOW TO MAKE A SPLASH AT DEMO (AND OTHER EVENTS)

In less than two weeks, 78 companies - most of them early-stage startups - will begin to gather in Palm Desert, Calif., eagerly awaiting their opportunity to launch their products to market, and to an influential audience of media, investors, and business development executives.

Most of these companies have been carefully planning their product debut for months (although you might be surprised by the number of - usually - young companies that have called since the first of the year, apparently surprised to discover their products are ready for market). All of these companies are eager to make a great start in the market, attracting the attention of the press, potential customers, Web visitors, and perhaps even investors.

So it's not surprising that most of my time, in the days prior to a DEMO conference, is consumed by demonstrating companies seeking advice on how to make the biggest impact at the event. Perhaps in the interest of efficiency, I thought I'd try to answer that question here. It should be noted that the counsel I'm about to give is not exclusive to DEMO; it applies to any launch event or venue.

KEITH SHAW
GENDER GAP SHRINKING IN TECH TOYS

Strolling the halls last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it's still pretty clear that technology is still a male-dominated field (yes, the "booth babes" are still out in force). But there are signs that vendors are starting to recognize the other 50% of the world with their products and designs.

Renee Blodgett, in her "Down the Avenue" blog (and friend of DEMO), wonders what a CES for women would be like. She writes, "... wouldn't it be nice to have choices other than black, white or silver?"

When technology devices have been introduced, they've always seemed to be one of those three colors, as if those colors would present themselves as more serious than other more colorful choices. Big computers were always gray, beige or white, and it wasn't until Apple started to come out with their colorful iMac lines that people started to think their computers could have some style.

SIX MINUTES WITH PODCAST

Hosted by Cathy Brooks of the Guidewire Group, each six-minute podcast features DEMO alumni companies to get the latest updates and their experiences post-DEMO.

Latest episode:
It's never easy to launch a company, but doing so in the US - specifically in Silicon Valley - can be an advantage with an almost plug-and-play infrastructure on which to build. Many international entrepreneurs have come to the U.S. in recent years to start companies, but others stick close to home and tackle the additional challenge of geography. In this episode, Kannuu CEO Kevin Dinn (pictured) talks about the height of this obstacle down under (6:06).

What's keep carriers deploying IMS awake at night?
