Convergence & VoIPNetwork World's Convergence & VoIP Newsletter, 06/13/07Barriers to converged networksBy Steve Taylor and Larry HettickToday, we’d like to highlight two short papers on convergence, both offered by AT&T and available on Webtorials. The first paper titled "Convergence Takes Hold in the Enterprise" presents some excellent and rather extensive research related to barriers to converged networks and discusses the steps being taken to overcome these barriers. The research and report were conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit for AT&T. According to the global survey, nearly half of senior executives say that IP convergence has been implemented in all or most of their businesses, nearly double the number recorded in the same 2005 survey. More than three-quarters predict this to be the case within three years. The rate of IP migration can no longer be termed “evolutionary”. This development reflects a significant shift in executive mindsets regarding the importance of network convergence to the business. The vast majority of survey respondents – 84% – view convergence as critical or important to achieving their strategic IT and business goals, compared with 45% in 2005 survey. The second paper “Gearing Up For IP Collaboration” is one of a series written to briefly address business and network deployment, and is also produced in cooperation with the Economist Intelligence Unit. It highlights the steps needed to ensure a successful convergence implementation, including gaining support from senior management, addressing security issues and taking a look at how organizations can lead the collaboration inside a unit or virtual team. Both articles are generic to business needs, and we recommend them to readers who are either still considering IP convergence or who just want to know more about what other enterprise are doing to improve their deployments.
