"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
Robert Frost
Dear Vorticians,
Every choice is a road taken or not taken. And with all the
changes going on in the enterprise IT industry, you're facing
some very difficult choices about the many different roads in
front of you - whether you are a CIO or a senior executive with a
technology company.
Wouldn't you like to have a clearer idea of where these roads
lead? Well, Geoffrey Moore and I think we have a way to help. One
of the key elements of the VORTEX 2005 conference in late October
is a special session called "Charting the Future" that's aimed at
helping you understand what is likely to happen in the next five
to 10 years and what's not.
How can we do that? Simple. We tap into the collective power of
your brains.
We'll survey Vorticians on 20 diverse, possible future scenarios
to find out what the brightest people in the industry believe is
on the horizon. Vorticians won't be able to waffle. They'll have
to state whether they believe a scenario is going to happen or
not. Here, for example, are four of the scenarios:
A. Businesses in emerging economic giants like China and India
have the ability to leap-frog U.S. companies in their use of
technology, embracing a true, Web-enabled model of computing and
avoiding the complexity mess American companies now face. They -
not their American counterparts - will be able to use IT
strategically.
B. By 2010, major software developers like Oracle, Microsoft, SAP
and others will not be able to keep up with the sheer force of
the growing open source community and they will begin to fall
dramatically behind in innovation.
C. By 2010, terrorists will have launched an attack that cripples
the Internet for weeks.
D. By 2010, Google will "own" the desktop.
At VORTEX, attendees will learn what their colleagues believe are
the most likely futures and then we'll tackle the really
difficult question: What should you do to prepare? If scenario C
is viewed as a virtual certainty, for example, what do you need
to do know to protect yourself? What should your strategic vendor
partners be doing?
Charting the Future will be an immersive experience that changes
your thinking and your strategy. It's another great reason to
attend VORTEX 2005. To apply, go to http://www.vortex.net.
Moves by Oracle and Salesforce.com highlight radically different
views of the future, 09/16/05
Speaking of different roads, Oracle and Salesforce.com couldn't
view the future of enterprise software more differently. Each is
making bold moves to support its vision. Take a look at what
Larry Ellison and his former protégé Marc Benioff are up to and
share your thoughts on the likely winner in this battle.

EBay does the Skype deal but - wow! - could it really be worth
the price?, 09/13/05
Also, EBay went ahead and bought Skype - for a price tag that
could ultimately reach more than $4 billion. Yeow! Take a look at
all the numbers and the strategy - direct from eBay CEO Meg
Whitman's mouth - and see if you think Skype's worth it. (Hint: I
don't.)
