Today's focus: Alfresco brings out open source content
management system

Businesses and organizations investigating free enterprise
software platforms might want to keep an eye on Alfresco, an
emerging open source software company.

Alfresco makes content management, portal and collaboration
software based on the open source portal server platform JBOSS
Portal 2.0 and Java 2 Enterprise Edition. The company says its
products provide a low-cost way to organize content, offering a
centralized repository for documents and images that can be
easily searched and shared among end users.

The browser-based interface allows end users to access content
based on workflow rules that are configured by the company or
organization. The interface allows users to access different
versions of the content as it moves through a workflow process,
and view content through search filters.

Alfresco can be integrated with desktop applications across
multiple PC platforms, allowing users to open content files in
the system through local desktop applications, such as word
processing, HTML/Web page editing or image editing software. The
software is also compatible with Microsoft's Common Internet
File System (CIFS) format.

In addition to enterprise content system users, Alfresco is also
offering its platform to independent software vendors developing
and selling enterprise CRM and ERP systems and who are looking
to integrate content management into product offerings.

The U.K. firm, which was founded in January 2005, just received
$2 million in venture capital funding from Accel Partners and is
poised to debut its technology this summer. The company is led
by the former founders of content management company,
Documentum.
