From Bradley Mitchell, your Guide to Computer Networking
By now you might be sick of seeing stories about yesterday's planned shutdown of certain DNS servers and what it could have maybe meant to your ability to access the Internet. Just that you are reading this newsletter suggests everything is OK.

Introduction to the Domain Name System (DNS)
The Internet, and many larger private Internet Protocol (IP) networks, rely on the Domain Name System (DNS) to help direct traffic. The DNS maintains a distributed database of network names and addresses, and it provides methods for computers to remotely query the database. Some people call DNS the "phone book of the Internet."

What Is a Public IP Address?
Thanks the magic of DNS, public IP addresses are normally hidden from our view, even though we effectively use them every time we go online. An IP address is considered public if the IP number is usable on the Internet. Some IP addresses are designated as private - the opposite of public, of course.

Dynamic DNS
DNS works great if your public IP address doesn't ever change. If it's the kind that changes periodically, you probably need dynamic DNS support for your network.
