From Bradley Mitchell, your Guide to Computer Networking
It's a bit too early for the hype, but based on what was demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week, gigabit Wi-Fi routers are coming this year. Whether we all will need them is a different question.

How Fast is Wi-Fi Networking?
The speed of any Wi-Fi wireless network connection varies greatly depending on the equipment used to make it. Even if you have the latest and greatest Wi-Fi router, your speed may be reduced noticeably depending on what kind of gear is on the other end of the connection. Wireless signal interference, and physical obstructions, don't help either.

Readers Respond: Do You Need 802.11n Wireless-N Wi-Fi?
It doesn't seem that long ago when 802.11n a.k.a. "Wireless N" Wi-Fi gear first appeared on the scene and we were debating the merits of upgrading. If you still aren't interested in what 802.11n has to offer, than 802.11ac probably won't sway you either.

Why Does My Wi-Fi Data Rate Keep Changing?
The most important least-known aspect of Wi-Fi networking is called "dynamic rate scaling." In a nutshell, it means that your wireless network performance will eventually suffer the further away you get from the access point. If the reported speed of your Wi-Fi connection keeps fluctuating, you are almost certainly seeing dynamic rate scaling in action.

Measuring the Strength of Your Wi-Fi Wireless Signal
The best way to ensure you have a strong Wi-Fi signal and optimal performance is to measure the signal strength. Unfortunately it can be a bit complicated to find this measurement, depending on what kind of device you are using.
