 | Have you ever wondered what the "http://" characters at the beginning of a Web page address mean? The original definition of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) on the Internet required browsers to use those characters when connecting to a Web browser via the HTTP network protocol. As browsers almost (but not) always connect to Web sites via HTTP, having these extra characters showing in the browser's address bar seems redundant and maybe annoying. But it causes no harm. | |
What Is HTTP?
Recently, Google decided to drop the display of 'http://' in its Chrome browser. Expect other browsers and Web applications to continue the trend. One day, 'http://' will probably become just another piece of technology history that our kids laugh at. But the protocol itself should live on, I think.
