Google has confirmed more than 1,000 communities responded to its call for an upcoming experimental ultra high-speed broadband project. Google Fiber for Communities promises to offer 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) services on a trial basis at some point in the future. (Unlike their open Wi-Fi network in Mountain View, CA, Google Fiber probably won't be free though.)

What Is Fiber Optic Networking?
Who will get to participate in the Google Fiber trials? Google intends to evaluate proposals and choose one or more communities by the end of 2010. While we're waiting to hear the results, expect to see more Google oriented publicity stunts from cities like Topeka, KS. Perhaps a few of you may be lucky enough to be enjoying fiber optic networking already.
