- Which Smartphone Reached 1 Million Sold The Fastest?
An enterprising reader of Engadget put together a nifty little
chart showing how fast a handful of smartphones hit the 1 million
mark. The figures used are those based on actual announced sales
by the companies involved. Those included are the Apple iPhone
and iPhone 3G, the BlackBerry Storm, the HTC G1, and the Nokia 5800.
Also, it looks like 2008 saw 1.21 billion mobile phones sold.

MORE FROM OTA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- iSuppli: BlackBerry Storm Innards Cost More Than The iPhone's
iSuppli sunk its teeth into the BlackBerry Storm to see what the
sum of its parts is really worth. According to its analysis, the
Storm costs RIM about $203 to make. Verizon Wireless is selling
the Storm for $199 (after rebates). Apple's iPhone 3G costs about
$174 to make and sells for $199/$299.
- House Squashes DTV Delay
In an interesting turn of events, the delay of the transition to
digital TV -- which looked all but a certainty early this week --
has been put on hold by the U.S. House of Representatives.
http://links.techwebnewsletters.com/ctt?kn=37&m=31229482&r=MTM4NTY5MzE2NgS2&b=2&j=NDU0ODQxMTAS1&mt=1&rt=0
- Opera Mini For Android Graduates To Full Release
Android users spoke and Opera listened. Today, Opera announced
that its Opera Mini 4.2 for Android software has graduated from
beta status and is now a full build. Lots of new goodies are on board.
- New Zealand Man Buys MP3 Player, Gets 60 Pages Of Sensitive
U.S. Military Data
New Zealand's Chris Ogle probably thought it was his lucky day
when he scored a used MP3 player cheap. But his luck soured when
it turned out to be broken -- and loaded with 60 pages of U.S.
military data and personally identifying information.
http://links.techwebnewsletters.com/ctt?kn=23&m=31229482&r=MTM4NTY5MzE2NgS2&b=2&j=NDU0ODQxMTAS1&mt=1&rt=0
- Apple Pushes Out iPhone Firmware 2.2.1
Along with a number of software updates released today, Apple is
boosting the iPhone's firmware version by dot-one to 2.2.1. What
does the firmware include?
- The G1 Gets Multitouch
It looks like G1 owners won't have to be jealous of iPhone owners
and their pinch navigation, as the Android community has made
multitouch possible. Unfortunately, I have a feeling we won't see
it in an official way for a long while.
http://links.techwebnewsletters.com/ctt?kn=10&m=31229482&r=MTM4NTY5MzE2NgS2&b=2&j=NDU0ODQxMTAS1&mt=1&rt=0
- Should Camera Phones Be Required To 'Click'?
Here's an interesting tidbit. A new bill has been put before
Congress that would require camera phones to make a noise or
"click" whenever they are used to take a picture. The idea is to
make it clear to everyone in the vicinity that the camera phone
is being use as a camera. Is this really necessary?
http://links.techwebnewsletters.com/ctt?kn=47&m=31229482&r=MTM4NTY5MzE2NgS2&b=2&j=NDU0ODQxMTAS1&mt=1&rt=0
- New Femtocell From Verizon Wireless Falls Short
Verizon Wireless officially introduced a femtocell product to
enhance in-office or in-home coverage for cellular voice service.
The big problem is, it doesn't offer any sort of boost for 3G
data services.
http://links.techwebnewsletters.com/ctt?kn=3&m=31229482&r=MTM4NTY5MzE2NgS2&b=2&j=NDU0ODQxMTAS1&mt=1&rt=0
- RIM CEO's Statement On Buggy Phones Is Unacceptable
The Wall Street Journal ran a story detailing the "bumpy start"
seen by Research In Motion's BlackBerry Storm smartphone.
InformationWeek detailed a lot of the Storm's software problems
in its full review of the device. In response to the rocky
launch, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that such issues are the
"new reality." I think that's the wrong attitude.
Cisco EnergyWise: Too costly for the used Cisco gear market?
Cisco's EnergyWise, its free IOS software upgrade that will allow Catalyst switches to manage the energy consumption of networked IP devices - and eventually building system assets - will not be available to customers of used or refurbished Cisco switches. Such customers would have to purchase a Relicense for Used Equipment license to take advantage of EnergyWise, writes Brad Reese in his blog. Since the cost of inspection and relicense is apparently cost-prohibitive, Reese is wondering whether that would kill the thriving Cisco secondary market. Doesn't that depend on how crucial customers consider EnergyWise to be. Read more.
Despite layoffs, Sky Not Actually Falling at Microsoft
The big news last week was that Microsoft plans to lay off some 5000 employees over an 18-month period (although 1400 layoffs occurred in a single day, last Thursday). That’s not actually as big as it sounds, when you consider that the company is adding some positions simultaneously, meaning that the effective reduction is more like 3000. Out of 94,000 employees worldwide, we’re talking about a 3% reduction. And that’s after several years of double-digit employee growth. Read more.
Buying from start-ups in the challenging economy - good or bad?
Steve Taylor By Steve Taylor and Jim Metzler
One topic that has received a lot of attention in these economic times is the viability of buying from start-ups in 2009. Sequoia Capital, one of the country's leading venture capital firms, has a presentation that describes the state of the economy and highlights what it all means to start-ups. Sequoia makes a number of recommendations for start-ups, including focusing on quality, lowering risk and reducing debt. It is difficult to argue with those recommendations. The problem is that the presentation contains a number of graphics, including a detailed image of a tombstone with "RIP Good Times" etched to create the impression of impending doom. Read full story
The VA data theft in 2006 involved the theft of a laptop from an employee’s home that contained the unencrypted personal records of 26.5 million military veterans and their spouses. The breach lead to several new laws concerning how the government and public companies are to treat such breaches. The laptop was ultimately recovered and the VA maintains that no personal data was ever compromised.
Enterprise on a blade: To general to be of any use for specific applications?
Steve Taylor By Steve Taylor and Larry Hettick
Today, we're continuing with reader feedback to our newsletter about convergence moving to an "enterprise on a blade" in which discrete boxes such as routers, switches and PBXs are replaced by services on a blade server. One reader commented: "Enterprise on a blade is asking a lot of ASIC development. Customers have always asked vendors for a 'godbox' and to a certain degree, networking vendors have delivered." We agree that vendors have delivered, and have been doing so for years but "to a certain degree." We also think that the godbox and ASIC solutions aren't always the best choice. Read full story
Steve Taylor is president of Distributed Networking Associates and publisher/editor-in-chief of Webtorials. Larry Hettick is a principal analyst at Current Analysis.
Enterprise on a blade and the risk of putting all your eggs into one basket We received several reader responses to last week's discussion about "enterprise on a blade" as a trend in convergence. Today we'll address readers' concerns with reliability, ASIC design demands, and enterprise infrastructure supplier approaches to the 'godbox.' For the purposes of discussion, we'll assume that enterprise on a blade - in which discrete boxes such as routers, switches and PBXs will be replaced by services on a blade server - will happen, although as we pointed out last week, we also think the enterprise-on-a-blade will co-exist with hosted services, software-as-a-service and cloud computing.
Is the future of convergence 'enterprise on a blade'? In reply to our newsletter last week titled "VoIP is not dead", we heard from Steve Hegg with a well written and insightful reply. Hegg is an independent consultant and is currently based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We'd like to share some of Hegg's points and respond to his views. Hegg believes that the industry is "heading for the era of the 'enterprise on a blade'...[that will] impact not only small, medium and large enterprises, but also the larger carriers that provide services to the home as well as the enterprise."
Innovation drives up productivity and drives down costs Following our newsletter predicting VoIP and convergence trends for 2009, we heard back from IntelePeer regarding our points about the importance of execution in a down market. IntelePeer added that innovation also drives productivity and reduces operational costs and that innovation serves as a key differentiator not only among infrastructure suppliers, but also for vendors and solution providers.
