Eliminating backup tapes can save big bucks

By Michael Osterman

Most of us are aware of the problem of managing an e-discovery effort using nothing but backup tapes. The process of finding all relevant tapes, extracting their content, indexing it and then putting it into a form that can be processed is time-consuming, disruptive and very expensive. Plus, consider that there are more than one million backup tapes currently used in business settings that contain in excess of 100 exabytes (that’s one billion gigabytes) of information. Add to this the fact that unified communications systems, in which voicemails and other content will be stored on backups, will make the problem much worse.

To address large organizations’ problems in managing all of these tapes, RenewData has just announced its Backup Tape Elimination Service. The goals of the service are several: to reduce IT costs associated with managing and presenting content on backup tapes for e-discovery and regulatory compliance purposes; to eliminate content that, if kept, can increase an organization’s liability; to reduce the potential for damage to an organization’s reputation; and to help organizations comply with the growing variety of statutes focused on data retention. By eliminating backup tapes, RenewData claims that it can provide some impressive savings, reducing backup associated IT costs nearly 99%.

RenewData’s service includes several components, including an audit of an organization’s physical media; an analysis of tape samples to determine the volume of content available, the amount of anticipated data reduction possible and the distribution of file types; de-duplication of files to reduce the overall amount of content; consolidation of content onto high-capacity media and related services.
