CHRIS SHIPLEY: PARTY TIME FOR DEMO ALUMNI

Last Tuesday night, more than 500 people packed into Zibibbo, a restaurant in downtown Palo Alto, to reunite with the friends and colleagues who share a common variable: they've all been a part of the DEMO experience.

It was an amazing evening, and a chance to celebrate the successes of many of DEMO's past demonstrators. It didn't hurt that earlier in the day, VMWare, a two-time DEMO presenter - launched a phenomenal IPO. We also got word that a number of recent demonstrators had landed venture funding, including CircleUp, PixSense, Vringo, Me.dium, and Jajah, among others. And we had the chance to celebrate the acquisitions of GrandCentral by Google and Kaboodle by Hearst Corp. These are just a few of the significant accomplishments of the many DEMO companies in recent months.

KEITH SHAW: MAYBE WE'RE SMARTER ON THE PERSONAL ID FRONT

Last week I wondered why we're still giving up personal information on the Internet in light of all of the security issues and red flags popping up all over the place. This was a reaction to a Sophos survey in which they were able to get several users to reveal personal information about themselves to a random friend request.

I got an interesting response from a reader (thanks Brendan!) who pointed out a pretty obvious question that a lot of us didn't cover when talking about this story: "How certain were the researchers that the information given was, in fact, true?"

Brendan continues that for a long time he's given fake birthdays when asked by various Web sites; when asked for a location, he gives slightly wrong addresses (assuming he's not getting anything shipped to him). "I don't mind them knowing my age to within a year or two, or my location to within a mile or two. I don't mind contributing a bit of what amounts to demographic data, if for no other reason than the hope that the ads I see on the site will be more interesting on the next visit."
