Today's focus: ICSA Labs names latest certification test passes

By Tim Greene

Periodically, ICSA Labs releases the names of VPN vendors whose
equipment has passed its certification tests, and a new list is
just out.

The SSL VPN equipment that passed has lived up to ICSA's second
level of testing for the equipment. The labs periodically
upgrade the tests to reflect the maturing nature of SSL VPN gear
in general. Each successive test sets a higher bar.

Still, the tests are created with advice from vendors, so they
reflect what devices are likely to be able to do so most
products can pass with a little fine-tuning.

Passing the test means the products meet a very specific list of
criteria, so they can be of some value to people shopping for
VPN equipment. But they don't say anything about
interoperability or ease of use or what the management platform
is like, or how much they cost - all things potential buyers
will want to know before making a choice.

But the list of certified equipment may help buyers narrow down
their list of possibilities.
The newly certified gear is:
* AEP Networks, Netilla Security Platform.
* Avental, EX-1500 VPN Appliance.
* F5 Networks, FirePass 1000.
* Juniper Networks, NetScreen-SA SSL VPN Appliance Family.
* Whale Communications, e-Gap Remote Access SSL VPN.

Also newly rated by ICSA Labs were a handful of IPSec VPN
devices. They are:
* Lucent VPN Brick 1100, Lucent VPN Family 20,50,80,150,350, 500
and 1100.
* Nortel's, VPN Router 600, 1010, 1050, 2700, 5000.
