Windows Phone 8.1 Update hands-on: An insignificant upgrade
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 (we'll call it 'the Update') is rolling out now, but don't get too excited. The infrequency of these releases makes any new one seem important. This was justified with Windows Phone 8.1. Not so with this update (er, Update), which I tried on the Lumia 1520 phablet (it wasn’t available yet for our Nokia Icon test phone). It adds a nice feature or two, but nothing earth-shattering. Mark Hachman Opened folders appear as a small icon at top, with contents grouped below. Amazon Fire dubbed an 'experiment in e-commerce' with lessons for future phones
Amazon' first smartphone, the Amazon Fire, has been nothing but controversial.Panned initially by reviewers before its release a week ago, one expert said on Monday that Amazon's basic intent with the Fire is to field an initial device to mainly gather corporate insights on ways to sell more Amazon products online.MORE ON NETWORK WORLD: iPhoneys: Apple iPhone 6 concepts "If you view the Fire phone as an effort by Amazon to break into the phone market that then sells millions, this is not it," said Michael Mace, mobile strategist at an independent user testing group called UserTesting. "But if you view it as a long-term experiment to see what's needed to build e-commerce into a phone, then it's a really good experiment to help Amazon find out what's good and what it needs."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Android tops iOS in online usage for the first time, says one tracker
A web metrics firm has announced that Android devices accounted for more mobile web traffic than iOS in July, the first time that’s happened since NetMarketShare began tracking such statistics. NetMarketShare uses data from its analytics clients to track which operating systems and browsers are being used to access the websites it serves. Android and iOS, between them, account for the vast majority of mobile web traffic, a total of nearly 89%. Of that, Android’s share for the month of July was 44.62%, while iOS accounted for 44.19%. +ALSO ON NETWORK WORLD: Cisco patches traffic snooping flaw in operating systems used by its networking gear | 20 cool things you can do with a Raspberry Pi +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
