Samsung, Arm and Nest launch Thread Group to tie home IoT devices together
Google's Nest subsidiary and heavy hitters including Samsung Electronics and Arm Holdings are launching the latest bid to make sensors, cameras, appliances and other devices in homes easily talk to each other.Machines are already communicating around consumers' homes, while others are chatting in factories and power grids. But what's out there today is more a collection of different networks than the Internet of Things that's supposed to transform our lives. The point of IoT is the data points it collects and the things it can control. The more of those that come into play, the more useful it will be.That's the purpose of the new specification, called Thread, which was announced on Tuesday and is expected to appear in certified products starting next year. But it's jumping into a game where there are already several technologies in use, including ZigBee, Z-Wave and Bluetooth Smart. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Thin, light, wire free -- Intel's vision for your next PC
Intel wants your future laptop to be thinner than an iPad and, like the iconic tablet, to be wire free. And it should cost less too.The company is developing chips and wireless technologies to meet those goals, with the first fruits of that development available starting this coming year-end holiday said, said CEO Brian Krzanich on an earnings call this week in which he discussed the company's vision of future PCs. About 600 million PCs worldwide are more than four years old and due for upgrades, so the development efforts come at a fortuitous time.Tablets thinner and lighter than the iPad that could be used as full PC replacements will be on store shelves by the end of this year, Krzanich said. Laptops and desktops with the faster and more power-efficient Broadwell processor will be widely available in the first quarter next year. Further in the future, Intel sees Chromebooks with mobile broadband connectivity and PCs that are wire free.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Why Samsung needs to move beyond Android -- and Google
Samsung's relationship with Google continues to be baffling. The two companies continually tussle quietly over Android, with Samsung experimenting with the Tizen OS in its new Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches while using Android as the base OS for its smartphone and tablet portfolio globally. (And it consistently modifies each generation of the Android OS with various Samsung customizations.)It's hard to know whether the two companies quietly hate each other while remaining diplomatic in public as they wrestle over a variety of mobile initiatives in the spirit of "competing while cooperating."MORE ON NETWORK WORLD: iPhoneys: Apple iPhone 6 concepts Some economists call that "co-opetition." However you define it, this is a relationship that needs to undergo big changes in the next two years as Samsung tries to find ways to stay profitable beyond producing multiple new versions of its smartphones and tablets. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

There's almost a million fake apps targeting your phone
Fake apps dressed up to look like official ones but actually designed to steal user data are increasingly targeting Android phone users, according to a study by Trend Micro. The company looked at the top 50 free apps in Google's Play Store and then searched Google's app store and others to see if fake versions existed. It found fake versions existed for 77 percent of the apps. The fake apps are often made to look like the real ones and have the same functions, but carry a dangerous extra payload."We've been tracking the activity of malicious or high-risk apps for nearly five years," said JD Sherry, vice president of technology and solutions at Trend Micro. "The potential for people to slip things past the gate and appear legitimate is much easier."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
