From Bradley Mitchell, your Guide to Computer Networking
How many different kinds of computer networks can you name? Most people know of at least three. One kind that you won't typically find on someone's list, though, is quantum networks. Last week, Industry researches announced a breakthrough in quantum networking that might turn it into a household name someday.

Types of Area Networks
One way to classify networks is by area. The Local area network (LAN) remains the most popular among this group. Some of the least well known: VANs (not the shoes, nor the squarish 4-wheeled vehicles, but rather value-added or virtual area networks).

What Is a Virtual Private Network?
A VPN is another special type of computer network. VPNs utilize tunneling technology to make private connections over public networks, making them useful for both long-distance connections as well as protected connections to wireless hotspot.

What is Dual Band Wireless Networking?
One type of Wi-Fi network, dual-band wireless networks are capable of communicating on either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands. This can be very useful when attempting to link a mix of different kinds of Wi-Fi equipment into a complete home network.

Readers Respond: Upgrading to 802.11n Wi-Fi
"For me 2.4 N is more uniform and compliant with most of the hardware out there. Not much 5 Ghz stuff right now. It also creates a problem if you do not have all 5Ghz hardware. I agree unless you really need more local network speed for video streaming for example. Or use a server for backups. I think people buy the higher priced routers and get little benefit from them." -John
