Year-end commentary is usually reserved for reflection and Top 10 lists; New Year's columns are the province of prognostication and prediction lists. And if most of the pundits are to be believed, the next 12 month look pretty grim. Everyone and every business have cut spending. The credit markets are frozen solid and financial markets are running scared. Venture capital is reinventing itself and entrepreneurs are squeezing nickels hard enough to make Washington cry.
The predictions are bleak enough to make you want to do a Rip van Winkle for the year, hoping to wake up to something better in 2010.
But that would be a big mistake. Here with my one and only prediction for 2009: the race will go to those who keep on running. Heck, even a light jog will be an advantage.
You see, the popular wisdom in bad economic times (thank you, Sequoia) is to slash and burn. RIF. Take demoralized, frightened people and demoralize and frighten them more. Treat the cash in the bank like it's the only money you'll ever see. Build yourself a nice long runway.
