Is Apple Planning To Launch An Ultra Mobile PC Next Year?
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGDb0Hi7YQ0G4U0Fjoi0EG
We've been hearing rumors for months that Apple is working on some
kind of tablet PC, most likely an ultramobile PC (UMPC) of some kind.
One of my colleagues, Mitch Wagner, thinks that Apple has no plans for
a tablet. Other industry insiders, like futurist Mark Anderson, think
Apple is about to enter the UMPC market just as this device category
hits the tipping point. So which is it?

Google's Flight Tracker: Better Than Fruitcake On The Holidays
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGCx0Hi7YQ0G4V0FjPo0ED
Google is rolling out a new search feature at the time of year when
Americans need it most: A service to let you know whether your flight
is running late. There are several sites on the Internet already
offering that service, but Google's looks like it'll be easier to use
when you're on the run and accessing from a smartphone. Which is, of
course, when you need that information most.

average of 767 messages per mobile subscriber over the course of 12
months. I think we can all do better than that.

Canalys released some interesting stats regarding smartphone sales in

Symbian ever regain its footing?

Verizon's $399 Price Tag Of The Palm 755p Is Out Of Touch With Reality
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGCx0Hi7YQ0G4V0FiXW0Eu
Has Verizon Wireless looked at the competition lately? Almost every
smartphone in its own roster of devices is hundreds of dollars cheaper
than the newly launched 755p. Sprint (NYSE: S) sells the same phone
for $249. Why on earth does Verizon think people will be dumb enough
to pay $399 for a tired device like the 755p?

Dear,

Dear,

I am Edmond Onyem,19years old and the only child of my late parents Mr.and Mrs Koffi Onyem. My father was a highly reputable busnness magnet-(a cocoa merchant)who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days. It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad year.Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of his who travelled with him at that time.

My mother died when I was just 4 years old, and since then my father took me so special. Before his death he told  me that he has the sum(USD$18 000 000) left in a bank here in Ivory Coast. I am just 19 years old and really don't know what to do. so,I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards to help me claim and invest the money in your country and also help me to come over to your country to further my education while you invest and manage the money. Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded.I will like that you keep this transaction confidential for the security of the money. Now permit me to ask these few questions:-

1. Can I completely trust you?
3.Can you be able to keep this transaction confidential for the security of the money?
2. What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you?

Consider this and get back to me

Thank you so much.

My sincere regards,

Edmond Onyem.

DISCUSS: Changing SSID on Windows Vista
Changing the default SSID is a recommended practice for improving the security of wireless home networks. When doing this, the network name of all wireless computers must be set to match. The exact procedure to change an SSID, however, depend on the computer's operating system and software configuration. Follow along on our message board as we discuss changing an SSID on Windows Vista (and what happens when it is not done successfully).

second-generation iPhone have an "Intel Inside" sticker on it?

The Top 5 Mobile Stories Of 2007
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPU0Eq
This year has been a heck of a ride in the world of mobility. We've
seen success and failure, love and hate, and tons of new technology.
Here are the five biggest stories of the year. I'll bet you'll never
guess what number 1 is.

AT&T Disables Windows Live On Treo 750 Smartphones
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPd0E6
Palm earlier this month released a Windows Mobile 6 update for AT&T
customers with Treo 750 smartphones. But it turns out that Treo 750
users are unable to utilize Windows Live. Instead they're restricted
to using AT&T's Xpress Mail and instant messaging, as one very unhappy
AT&T customer pointed out.

More BlackBerry 9000 Details Leaked
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPe0E7
The Boy Genius Report has the scoop on the much-anticipated BlackBerry
9000 smartphone, yet again. Let's take a look at what this
touch-screen smartphone promises.

Are Google iPhone Apps Also Beta Apps For Android?
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPf0E8
It seems that lots of Googlers are really into the iPhone, including
Googler-in-Chief Eric Schmidt. Google has been launching new mobile
applications specifically for the iPhone, just as the company also
prepares its own Android platform. Is there a hidden connection
between the iPhone and Google Android?

Brits Caught Talking While Driving To Be Jailed
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPg0EA
Talking, texting, or otherwise using a mobile device while driving is
becoming illegal in more and more states here in the United States.
None of the penalties here are as severe as those about to go into
effect over in the United Kingdom, though. Break the
no-texting-and-driving law in England and you'll be sent up to the Big
House.

RIM Closes 2007 With 10% Of Worldwide Smartphone Market
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPh0EB
RIM saw yet another year of strong growth in 2007. It will finish the
year as the world's No. 2 supplier of smartphones, behind only
behemoth Nokia. RIM is going to have to do better outside of North
America if it wants to keep it up.

T-Mobile Promises To Support SunCom Customers
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPi0EC
T-Mobile this week issued a letter to SunCom customers, updating them
on its upcoming acquisition of the southeastern wireless carrier and
outlining its plan to support the customers going forward.

Now You Can Own A Ferrari For A Few Hundred Dollars
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPj0ED
The latest Ferrari won't go from 0-60 in under 4 seconds, nor top out
at more than 200 mph. But it will make pretty good phone calls, let
you watch video, and browse the Web. Did you think I was talking about
a real Ferrari? Nope. I'm talking about the Motorola Z8 Ferrari
Edition mobile phone (which isn't going to really compensate for
anything).

Why Is Palm Still Standing?
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPk0EE
In view of the latest earnings report from Palm Inc. -- a quarterly
loss of $9.63 million (compared with a $12.8 million profit a year
earlier), revenue down 11%, and a stock in free fall -- it's time to
ask, Why does this company still exist as an independent entity?

Verizon's Flagship Media Phone Receives Firmware Update To Fix Bugs
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPl0EF
Turns out the iPhone isn't the only high-profile device to receive
regular firmware updates. Today, LG and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless
made a firmware update available for the LG VX-10000 Voyager, a
supposed iPhone killer. Rather than offer new features, this update
serves to fixify things that ain't workin' right.

Wish You Could Listen To That MP3 At Home On Your Smartphone? WeBot
Can Help
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPm0EG
Have you ever wished you could access that one song you can't get out
of your head, but realized it's on your PC at home and not on your MP3
player? Well, one startup could be the answer to your problem.

Developers: Android Doesn't Work
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPn0EH
Looks like Google doesn't have the Midas touch after all. According to
reports, a sizable number of developers who've been working with the
SDK for Google's Linux-based Android platform say it is full of bugs
and often doesn't work at all.

Google's Flight Tracker: Better Than Fruitcake On The Holidays
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPo0EI
Google is rolling out a new search feature at the time of year when
Americans need it most: A service to let you know whether your flight
is running late. There are several sites on the Internet already
offering that service, but Google's looks like it'll be easier to use
when you're on the run and accessing from a smartphone. Which is, of
course, when you need that information most.

Report: People Will Send More Text Messages Next Year Than This Year
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPp0EJ
Gartner took quite a leap of faith in predicting that SMS usage in
2008 will top 2007's numbers. In fact, Gartner goes so far as to say
that the number of messages will top 2.3 trillion worldwide. That's an
average of 767 messages per mobile subscriber over the course of 12
months. I think we can all do better than that.

iPhone Second Only To RIM In U.S. Smartphone Market
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FjPq0EK
Canalys released some interesting stats regarding smartphone sales in
the third quarter. The iPhone has jumped to the number two spot,
grabbing 27% of the market, handily beating out Windows Mobile, Linux,
Symbian, and Palm devices. Will RIM ever lose the top spot, and will
Symbian ever regain its footing?

Verizon's $399 Price Tag Of The Palm 755p Is Out Of Touch With Reality
http://update.techweb.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eBGBC0Hi7YQ0G4U0FiXW0Ez
Has Verizon Wireless looked at the competition lately? Almost every
smartphone in its own roster of devices is hundreds of dollars cheaper
than the newly launched 755p. Sprint (NYSE: S) sells the same phone
for $249. Why on earth does Verizon think people will be dumb enough
to pay $399 for a tired device like the 755p?

CHRIS SHIPLEY
COUNTDOWN TO '08 #8: BUBBLE? WHAT BUBBLE?

We've come to the last of our eight trends for the coming year, and it seems fitting at this point to offer up an uber-trend, some prediction that will cast across the whole year.

Given the oft-asked question - When will the bubble burst? - let me now predict that the bubble will not break. It won't. It can't. Because it doesn't exist.

Repeat after me, there is no Web 2.0 bubble. Never has been. Sure, there's been plenty of hype, and more than a few folks have made some money and a reputation by playing on the popular perception that the market was in an unbridled upswing, fueled by all things widget and Web-based. But the economics have never been there to inflate a financial bubble. On a relative basis, too little capital has been put at risk in Web 2.0 companies. So even if all those hot little companies shut their doors on January 1, the capital markets would feel very little pain. So if you are tip-toeing around hoping to extract some last bit of value before the whole thing blows, you can rest easy.

KEITH SHAW
MY OWN 8 FOR '08: PREDICTIONS GALORE

My esteemed colleague, Chris Shipley, has shared her eight predictions for 2008 over the last eight weeks, giving everyone the big picture of what she thinks will be the big trends for the upcoming year.

For my part, I'll give my eight predictions, but will do so in one quick column as we head into the last DEMOletter of the year. These predictions aren't as far-reaching in scope as Chris' predictions, but I'll argue that they will be just as accurate.

#1: The convergence of mobile devices being used for personal and business use will continue. The iPhone was just the beginning - more mobile devices will include personal features (music, cameras, videos, games, etc.) as well as business features (security, productivity, network speed). Smart companies will accept this trend and work with their employees on supporting these devices. We'll also see a new iPhone model that supports corporate e-mail and runs on a faster wireless network.

DEMO 2006 alum, ZOHO, is one of those unique start-ups that was born under the umbrella of a larger company. Pleo: The robot you'll love
It would be easy to call Pleo a robotic dinosaur toy, but that's unfair to both Ugobe, Pleo's maker, and to Pleo itself. Ugobe considers Pleo, the representation of a 1-week-old Camarasaurus dinosaur from the Jurassic period, a new "life form." From the start, Pleo was designed to incorporate all the traits of "autonomous life" -- Pleo doesn't just walk around and make noises at its owner, he (or she) is capable of expressing joy, aggression, anger, even fear, depending on the actions of the owner or as a reaction to its environment.

For companies that launch at DEMO there is much discussion about the massive effort necessary to prepare for such a major event.
