Need to do application performance monitoring? Help is available

By Ann Bednarz

Getting a handle on what level of application performance end users are experiencing is a tricky science, particularly with so many applications designed for a LAN now being delivered over the WAN. One of the challenges is collecting the right data from multiple sources and putting it together to provide a clear picture of what’s influencing application response times.

For example, IT managers need to be able to measure end-to-end response time and traffic flows, as well as be able to isolate problems with an application, server or network. Factors such as how a particular application protocol behaves can play as much a role as network conditions including latency, packet loss, jitter and throughput.

Untangling any performance issues requires information about all these parameters, and Network World has a cool new Buyer's Guide that can help identify the right product for the job. Products listed in the Application Performance Monitoring Buyer’s Guide are designed to highlight performance issues and offer analysis and troubleshooting options.

So far 16 products are included in the guide. Readers can drill down to see an overview of each product, plus a vendor snapshot. Product specifications detail a slew of attributes, some of which are: price, target market, form factor, applications monitored, type of monitoring (active or passive), analysis method, reporting features and management options.

Understanding how applications perform under different load conditions and across geographies is a key step in architecting a solution that improves the end users’ experience. Once the problem areas are isolated, enterprises can better evaluate what they need to do to fix things -- be it compression, protocol optimization, traffic and bandwidth management, or QoS.

One other note for vendors that want to list a product in the guide: Network World is not charging for participating in the guide, but our service provider partner is. The Application Performance Monitoring guide -- and dozens of other Buyer’s Guides from Network World -- rely on mBLAST, which is a tool used to gather and keep current all the information that goes into the matrices. mBLAST handles all the logistics of dealing with the market research and collection, normalization, and editing of the data bound for our site. Existing mBLAST subscribers get this as part of their normal subscription. Non-subscribers are charged a $99 fee. (Network World gets none of this fee.)
